What are breath sounds? |
Sounds that come from the mouth when you breathe in or out? |

What is the procedure to listen for breath sounds? |
Stethoscope is placed on thorax anteriorly, laterally, and posteriorly. Pt. inspires fully through mouth and exhales quietly. |

What are the normal breath sounds? |
Bronchial - inspiratory phase is shorter than expiratory phase with slight pause between.
Vesicular - ispiratory is longer than expiratory with no pause. |

What are the abnormal breath sounds? |
Crackles (Rales) - high pitched popping sound heard during inspiration. Can be associated with obstructive or restrictive disorders. Wheezes - musical or whistling during inspiration and expiration Rhonchi - Snoring or gurgling low pitched sounds, heard during both inspiration and expiration |

What is a Bronchophony, Egophony, Whispered pectoriloquy? |
Bronchophony - Test where pt speaks while therapist auscultates bronchopulm segments, abnormal voice sounds heard over the lung, with the voice too clear and high pitched, indicating solidification Egophony - vocal sound heard thru stethoscope and resembling bleating goat, often in cases or pleurisy with effusion. Whispered Pectoriloquy - increased loudness of whispering noted during auscultation with stethoscope on the lung fields. |
