What are breath sounds?

Sounds that come from the mouth when you breathe in or out?

What equipment is needed to hear them?

Stethoscope

What is the procedure to listen for breath sounds?

Stethoscope is placed on thorax anteriorly, laterally, and posteriorly. Pt. inspires fully through mouth and exhales quietly.

What are the normal breath sounds?

Bronchial - inspiratory phase is shorter than expiratory phase with slight pause between.



Vesicular - ispiratory is longer than expiratory with no pause.

What are the abnormal breath sounds?

Crackles (Rales) - high pitched popping sound heard during inspiration. Can be associated with obstructive or restrictive disorders.


Wheezes - musical or whistling during inspiration and expiration


Rhonchi - Snoring or gurgling low pitched sounds, heard during both inspiration and expiration

What is a Bronchophony, Egophony, Whispered pectoriloquy?

Bronchophony - Test where pt speaks while therapist auscultates bronchopulm segments, abnormal voice sounds heard over the lung, with the voice too clear and high pitched, indicating solidification


Egophony - vocal sound heard thru stethoscope and resembling bleating goat, often in cases or pleurisy with effusion.


Whispered Pectoriloquy - increased loudness of whispering noted during auscultation with stethoscope on the lung fields.
