Breast function and anatomy:

The breast produces milk for lactation. The epithelial component of the tissue consists of lobules (where milk is made) which connect to the nipple.

Where do most cancers of the breast arise from?

From the cells which form the lobules and terminal ducts.

How common is it, how do they screen for it and how often?

The most common cancer worldwide in females. Screening is performed by the use of a mammogram. Screens all women between the age of 50-70 every 3 years.

Breast cancer risk factors:

Gender, Ageing, family history, personal history, race, dense breast tissue, genetics, menstrual periods.

Describe the risk of gender:

Being a women is higher risk a estrogen and progesterone in higher quantities.

Risk increases with age.

How does family history increase risk?

Having one first degree relative doubles risk.

How does race affect risk?

White women are higher risk than african american.

How does breast density affect risk?

Women with dense breasts have higher risk.
