what are the main elements in the atmosphere? and how much?
nitrogen / 78%
oxygen / 21%
Argon / 1%
what form are most fuels in?
hydrocarbons
what are the main pollutants in the atmosphere?
carbon dioxide, carbon monoide, nitrgen, nitrogen dioxide, carbon particulates, sulfur and sulfur dioxide
give an example of a chemical reaction using sodium(a metal that will burn if you touch it) and chlorine (a poisonous gas) to give an edible product.
sodium+chlorine --> sodium chloride (table salt)
what are the symtoms that carbon monoxide can cause
drowzy, headachy and may sometimes kill
describe carbon dioxide
a carbon molecule partnered with 2 oxygen molecules that pollutes the earth's atmosphere and is known as a green house gas
describe what carbon particulates are
they are small particles of carbon that forms compounds such as soot and covers everything in soot so they become blackend
where does sulfur come from
impurities in fuels
what are the causes of sulfur dioxide?
it causes acid rain which kills trees and makes lakes acidic and kills animals and plants and it destroys buildings and statues made from some stones e.g. limestoone
what are the causes of nitrogen pollution?
acid rain and breathing problems such as asthma.
how is nitrogen pollution involved with pollution in the air?
nitrogen pollution is formed from nitrogen in the air when the fuel is burnt.
what are the product when nitrogen reacts with oxygen?
nitrogen in the air react with the oxygen in the air to produce small amounts of compounds known as nitrogen oxides(nitrogen monoxide & nitrogen dioxide)
how could we reduce pollution?
the most simplest of way to reduce all types of pollution is to use less electricity but if we wanted to reduce amount of pollution from cars we could use catalytic converters or use electric cars.
what are the elements that power stations create when they burn coal?
they create sulfur dioxide and and carbon particulates.
a 3 year old car has to pass a test called a MOT why?
because there is a legal limit to the amount of pollution your car can use so the test is to see how well your car is running and see what needs replacing to reduce pollution.
