Brachial Plexus

A nerve plexus is a network of nerves that may be divided into a SUPRACLAVICULAR DIVISION (which lies superior to clavicle) and an INFERIORCLAVICULAR DIVISION (which lies inferior to clavicle)

SUPRACLAVICULAR DIVISION

Ventral Rami

3 Trunk

4 nerves that arise from the rami & trunks

INFERACLAVICULAR DIVISION

lies in axilla and consists of :

3 cords and nerves arising from those cords.

Step 1 in Brachial Plexus

Ventral Rami of C5 & C6 join to create Superior upper trunk

C7 creates Middle Trunk

C8 &T1 create INFERIOR lower trunk

Step 2 in Brachial Plexus

Each of 3 trunks then divides posterior to clavicle into ANTERIOR DIVISION and POSTERIOR DIVISION.

Step 2 continued.

Nerve fibers in ANTERIOR DIVISION innervate anterior regions of upper extremity, while those in POSTERIOR DIVISION innervate posterior region

Anterior Divison

ANTERIOR DIVISION from C5, C6,C7 trunks create LATERAL CORD (C5,C6,C7)

ANTERIOR DIVISION from INFERIOR TRUNK (C8 , T1) create MEDIAL CORD

Posterior Division

Posterior divisions from Superior (C5, C6) , Middle (C7) and inferior (C8,T1) TRUNKS unite to create the POSTERIOR CORD (C5,C6,C7,C8,T1)

Nerve Cord Naming

Are named relative to the axillary artery

LATERAL CORD lies lateral to artery ,

MEDIAL CORD lies medial to artery

POSTERIOR CORD lies posterior to artery
