The American Bowling Congress, a former bowling governing organization.
ABC
The 60 feet of pine and maple beyond of the foul line on which the ball is rolled.
Alley
The maple area in front of the foul line where the bowler executes steps and delivery. The delivery of the ball.
Approach
The arc of the bowling arm and the hand from the first move toward the line until the delivery of the ball over the line; should be in the pendulum swing.
Armswing
Aiming targets on the lane to help the bowler align the starting position of their approach with the ball path down the lane.
Arrows
Figure reached by dividing the total sums of games by the total number of games bowled to date.
Average
A ball that curves left to right (outside to inside) for right handers or right to left for left handers.
Backup/Reverse Hook

Bedposts
A score allowed for an absent bowler, usually the average minus ten or a set score if there is no actual player. In this class it is 120.
Blind
An individual piece of the lane which runs the length of the lane.
Board
Rules of conduct in the sport of bowling including yielding to the bowler on your right, no foul language, good sportsmanship at all times, competitive but not disrespectful.

A strike that crosses over the head pin and hits the opposite pocket.
Brooklyn
When a bowler lets his elbow get away from his body during the swing; this is considered an unacceptable form. Usually this happens because only two fingers and no thumb are used trying to create an illegal spin.

Clean game
It is they type of grip in which the fingers are thumb are inserted completely into the holes.
Conventional grip
Ball that breaks from right to left (outside to inside) for right-handers and left to right for left-handers.
Curve/Hook
Pins knocked down but remaining on the lane or in the gutter; must be removed before continuing play.
Dead wood
The portion of the lane where the pins are set.
Deck
For the approach they are used to set the bowlers feet at the start of the approach. For the lane they are used as aiming devices.
Dots
The type of bowling ball grip where the fingers are as far enough from the thumb, so they can only be inserted into the ball as the first joint. It is considered to be the best grip for consistent scores and for throwing a hook ball.
Fingertip Ball
It is the motion after the release. the arm should finish straight, over the head and aiming towards the target. It puts the final direction on the ball.
Follow-through
Crossing this with any body part on the first ball, pins are reset and and it is recorded as an F on the score sheet. On the second ball it is recorded as an F and that frame is over.
Foul
1/10th of a game of bowling. Allows a bowler the attempts to knock down 10 pins.
Frame
A depression or channel on the right and left side of the lane that runs the length of the lane.
Gutter
A ball that goes into the gutter.
Gutter ball
Adjustment to the score totals between individuals or teams to equalize competition.
Handicap
The number 1 pin of a rack.
Head pin
Bowling ball that is provided by the bowling center. It is usually made of plastic.
House ball

King Pin
This is the pin that is aimed at in order to give a bowler the best chance of converting the spare.
King Pin
Playing the surface. 60 foot maple pine or synthetic surface beyond the foul line on which the ball is rolled. It is also called the alley.
Lane
Teams that bowl against each other in the scheduled format. Bowling that involves alternating on a pair of lanes.
League Bowling
Any pins left standing after the first ball attempt in a frame.
Leave
The upward motion of the ball impaired by the fingers during the release.

Pit
the outward movement of the ball that puts the ball in motion. On a four step approach, it is the first step. On a five step approach it beings on the second step.
Push away
Bowling ball with tacky surface created by a polymer added to urethane which provides more grip of the ball to the lane.
Reactive resin ball
Pertains to the motion of the hand as the ball is put onto lane.

Slide
All 10 pins knocked down with two balls. It is worth 10 points plus your next ball. It is marked with /
Spare

Split
Same as set up, the phase of delivery before initiation of movement.
Stance
All 10 pins knocked down on teh forst ball. In scoring it is worth 10 plus next two balls. Marked with an X
