Lehi came to America in 600 B.C.
Mulek escaped Jerusalem and came to America in 587 B.C
What did the partaking of the Fruit represent in Lehi’s dream?
Tree of Life = Love of God. To partake of the love of God is to partake of Jesus' Atonement
What was contained on the brass plates?
1. The five books of Moses: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy
2. A record of the Jews from the time of Adam (approx. 4000 BC) to time of Zedekiah (approx. 600 BC)
3. Prophecies of the holy prophets from Adam's day down to the days of Zedekiah (these were prophecies of past prophets)
4. Prophecies of Jeremiah (these were prophecies of a current, living prophet).
5. A genealogy of Lehi's father. Lehi and Laban were both descendants of Joseph
6. They were of great worth to preserve the commandments of the Lord
What period of time did the brass plates cover? p.29/Appendix p.4/chart from Adam to which Old Test. prophet and which old Test. King?
4000 BC - 600 BC
From Adam to Jeremiah
Know facts about the plates. (pp. 41-44) Which were started first and when? What was on each set? Which did Mormon abridge?
• Brass plates: started in 4000 BC, contains 5 books of Moses and prophecies from Adam to Jeremiah
• Plates of Ether: started in 2000 BC, contains record of Jaredite civilization and destruction
• Large plates: started in 590 BC, contains the major record of the Nephite history
• Small plates: started in 570 BC, contains record of the religion of the people.
• Gold plates (or plates of Mormon): started in 300 AD, contains Mormon's summary from Lehi to Moroni
How do the small plates fit into the record? What was Nephi’s intent in keeping the small plates?
The small plates written by Nephi cover the exact same time ( 600 BC - 130 BC) as the 116 lost pages written by Lehi. The small plates replace the 116 lost pages. Nephi's intent was to persuade men to come unto the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and be saved.
What is the Book of Ether?
Moroni's abridgment of the Jaredite record
What was in the lost 116 pages? What time period did that cover?
The stolen manuscript was a translation from the golden plates. It was a third person abridgment by Mormon of the historical record from the time of Lehi (600 BC) to the time of King Benjamin (130 BC)
What actual plates did Joseph have?
Plates of Mormon: abridgment of the book of Lehi --> lost 116 pages
Small plates of Nephi: 1,2 Nephi, Jacob, Enos, Jarom, Omni
Plates of Mormon cont.: continuation of Mormon's abridgment of the Large plates of Nephi, contains Mosiah Alma, Helaman, 3 Nephi, Mormon chapters 1-7
Plates of Mormon continued by Moroni: Mormon chapters 8-9, Ether (Moroni's abridgment of and commentary on the Jaredite record, Moroni
Title Page
Sealed Portion
Which were called “these” and when did they begin? Which were called “those?” When did they begin?
"These" = small plates of Nephi, begin in 570 BC
"Those, Other" = large plates of Nephi, begin 590 BC
What three different civilizations did Nephi see in his vision contained in 1 Nephi 10-14?
Jews, Lamanites, and Gentiles
What does 1 Nephi 13 state about when the plain and precious truths were taken from the Bible? (v.24-29, p.56-58) Who was mainly responsible for the majority of the loss of the plain and precious truths?
They were taken from the bible before it was even put together.

Corrupt scribes, translators, and priests are responsible for the majority of the loss of the plain and precious truths.
What is the Great and Abominable Church? What is the difference in the church described in 1 Nephi 13 and 1 Nephi 14? (p. 52) What chapter describes the historical church? The typological church? (pp.52,54, 63)
The Great and Abominable Church is anything that perverts the true gospel (church of the devil = every evil and worldly organization on Earth, all of the systems Christian and non-Christian that have perverted the plain and precious gospel.)

The Great and Abominable Church in 1 Nephi 13 = actual historical church that apostatized.
The Great and Abominable Church in 1 Nephi 14 = symbolic church = all wickedness (typological church)
In I Nephi 16:10 Lehi finds the Liahona. What is the symbolism associated with the Liahona?
"God gives light, as does the Sun".

The Liahona symbolizes the Holy Ghost in our lives, as well as our patriarchal blessings. The word of Christ will point us to eternal bliss, just as the Liahona pointed them to the Promised Land.
Who were Zenock, Neum, and Zenos (1 Nephi 19:10-14). Where were their writings recorded?
They were Old Testament prophets who lived in the Holy Land.

Their writings were recorded on the brass plates. Nephi either paraphrased their writings or copied their writings onto the small plates.
What caused Israel’s scattering? How is Israel gathered? (Handout: The Book of Mormon, the Gathering of Israel, Appendix p. 9, 10. Point #2 Also pp. 82) What did Joseph teach was the main purpose for the gathering of Israel? (p. 82) Is the present gathering of the Jews the one prophesied in scripture? To whom must the Jews gather 1st?
They were scattered because they rejected the gospel, defiled the priesthood, forsook the church, and departed from the kingdom. They were scattered because they turned from the Lord, worshipped false gods, and walked in the way of the heathen nations. They were scattered because they forsook the Abrahamic covenant, tramped under their feet the holly ordinances, and rejected the Lord Jehovah who is the Lord Jesus, of whom all their prophets testified. Israel was scattered for apostasy.

Israel will be gathered through repentance and baptism into the LDS church. Believing the gospel, joining the church, and coming into the kingdom.

The main purpose for gathering Israel was to build unto the Lord a house whereby He could reveal unto His people the ordinances of His house and the glories of His kingdom and teach the people the way of salvation.

The present day gathering of the Jews is not the one prophesied in scripture. They must gather first to the Church of Jesus Christ.
is the “mighty nation” in I Nephi 22:7-8? What is the “marvelous work”?
The "mighty nation" = the United States

The "marvelous work" = the Restoration of the Gospel
What do we know concerning the creation? Article: Christ and the Creation (Appendix pp. 14-20) See also: Principles concerning the Creation, p. 96 At what point did things become temporal (mortal)? Was there sin, corruption or reproduction in man or animals prior to the fall? In what state (Temporal or immortal) were things placed on the earth during phase II? (See: A Look at the Fall, Phase I, II, III, p. 94)
The Creation is the father of the Fall. Our knowledge is limited. Christ is the Creator and Redeemer of worlds so numerous that they cannot be numbered by man.
1st day = Elohim, Jehovah, Michael, a host of the noble and great ones, together "the Gods" created the atmospheric heavens and the temporal earth. It was "without form and void".
2nd day = the waters were divided between the surface of the earth and the atmospheric heavens that surrounded it. A "firmament/expanse/Heaven" was created to divide the waters.
3rd day = The day life began. The Gods brought forth grass and herbs and plants and trees, dictated that they could only grow from their seeds and bring forth fruit of their own kind.
4th day = Light, seasons, days, years, moon stars.
5th day = "every living creature" who lived in water. No provision for evolution.
6th day = Beasts of the Earth created. Man created, both male and female
7th day = day of rest.

Things became temporal/mortal after the Fall. There was no sin, corruption, or reproduction in man or animals prior to the Fall.

Things were placed on the Earth in an immortal state during phase 2.
What types of death were brought about by the fall? (2 Nephi 2, pp. 97) How does the Atonement affect each death? (Principles Concerning the Fall, p. 96, 97); see also p. 111 #3. What was the reaction of Adam and Eve’s to the fall? (p. 94)
Physical death and Spiritual death were brought about by the Fall.

The atonement overcomes both deaths unconditionally. Everyone's body and spirit will be united through resurrection. Everyone is reunited with God to be judged.

Adam reacted to the Fall by saying that his eyes were opened (he became as the gods), he would have joy (unavailable prior to the Fall), and in the flesh he would see God (made possible by the resurrection)

Eve reacted to the Fall by saying that her and Adam would have seed (procreation came into the world through the Fall), they would know good and evil (choosing between opposites afforded rewards), and they have known the joy of their redemption and eternal life (the atonement would be provided)
What changes did the fall bring about in the earth? (pp. 93, 94) What were the conditions before and after the fall? (Appendix pp. 21-22) See also: Principles concerning the Fall, pp. 96, 97. Know what is said in 2 Nephi 2:22-23.
The Earth went from Terrestrial to Telestial. It went from an immortal state to a mortal/temporal state. Spiritual death, physical death, reproduction, blood, experiencing joy and accountability, good, evil, sin, corruption, aging, pain, and being out of God's presence came into the world. Before the Fall none of those things were in the world.

Before the Fall there was no death, procreation or mortality, these things came after the fall.
What were the Lord’s directions to Adam concerning the trees in the Garden? (See Explanation of Forbidden Fruit) What was “forbidden”? (pp. 91, 92) What is contained in the 1st Presidency’s official statement about the origin of man?
If he wished to remain as he was then he was not to eat the fruit. But if he desired to eat it and partake of death he was at liberty to do so.

It was forbidden for Adam and Eve to remain in the garden if they partook of the fruit.

The 1st Presidency has issued the statement that Man began life as a human being, in the likeness of our Heavenly Father. They proclaim man to be the direct and lineal offspring of Deity.
What would happen if Christ didn’t complete the Atonement by leading a sinless life?
Our bodies would rot, crumble, and rise no more.

Everyone (including Abraham, Isaiah, Joseph Smith, Thomas S. Monson, and me) would become devils
For what sins and transgressions does Christ’s blood atone? Does this include the pre-existence? Other worlds? (pp. 112, 113) Why is it considered infinite? (pp. 111, 112) Did Satan propose a different plan – one which would force everyone to be good? (p. 113, p. 270 Elder McConkie Statement; Moroni 7:17) Will people who came to earth, gained bodies, and became sons of perdition be resurrected?
Everything except murder and denying the Holy Ghost.

It includes the Pre-Existence because it is infinite and eternal.

It covers other worlds.

It is considered infinite because it is timeless, covering the past, present, and future.

Satan did not propose a different plan, he just proposed a different way of putting the plan into operation. He wanted to deny men their agency so they wouldn't have to choose right or wrong, they could just do wrong.

Yes
How are we to understand Isaiah? What keys does Nephi give us? (2 Nephi 25:1-7, p. 135) In which section of the Book of Mormon chapters does he give us these keys? Is it before or after the Isaiah chapters (2 Nephi 12-24)?
3 Keys to Understanding Isaiah:
1. Understanding the manner of prophesy among the Jews
2. Use the spirit of prophecy
3. Live in the day of the fulfillment of the prophecies
What is the meaning of “out of Zion shall go forth the Law? (2 Nephi 12:3, p. 122) To what is 2 Nephi 15:26 referring?
(p. 124) What is the Ensign or standard? (p. 80) What do seraphim, smoke, and live coal symbolize?
It means that governments similar to our constitutional form of government will be established in nations throughout the world.

The church will spread rapidly throughout the world.

Ensign/standard = the church

Seraphim = angelic beings
Smoke = Presence of the Lord
Live Coal = Cleansing power of the Holy Ghost
What 3 groups does Nephi address in 2 Nephi 25-30? (p. 136) He reviews the history of each group. What is each group’s major problem? What is the solution?
The Jews, the Lamanites, The Gentiles.

Their problem is that they all rejected Jesus, the solution to the problem is always an acceptance of Christ through the Book of Mormon and its teachings
What tactics did Nephi say Satan would use in the last days? (Reasons why Book of Mormon will be of Great Worth)
1. Churches will be built up (not unto the Lord) and will contend with one another
2. Priests will teach with learning and deny the Holy Ghost. (Many ministers do not claim any revelation. Their doctrine comes from university training.
3. Priests will deny the power of God. (Many ministers claim that ordinances performed by priesthood authority are not necessary.)
4. Many will justify sin (rationalization)
5. Many false and foolish doctrines will be taught.
6. Churches will have become corrupt.
7. Satan will stir people up to anger against that which is good. (rebellion)
8. Satan will entice people to think all is well in Zion. (apathy)
9. Satan will persuade people to believe that there is no devil. (Intellectual approach)
Who will be at the judgment bar? 3 prophets end their book by telling us they’ll be there
Nephi, Jacob, and Moroni will be at the judgment bar.
What did Jacob say his purpose was in writing?
1. So that people would know that they knew of Christ
2. So that people would know that the Nephites had a hope of his glory hundreds of years before his coming
3. So that people would know that all the prophets had a hope of his coming
4. So that people would know that Old Testament prophets believed in Christ and worshiped the father in his name
5. So that people would know that the Nephites worshiped the father in Christ's name
6. So that people would know that the Nephites kept the Law of Moses to point them to Christ
7. So that people would know that the Nephites had many revelations and witnesses that strengthened their hope and faith
8. So that people would know that the Nephites knew their weaknesses and knew it was by Christ's grace that they had power to do miracles
What do the major symbols of the allegory represent? (Jacob 5, p. 166) Trees (Tame, wild - cutting off, grafting in branches) What are the 4 major time periods represented by the 4 visits of the master to the vineyard?
Tame = Israel/the church
Wild = Gentiles/Israel in apostasy
Grafting In = Gathering (baptism)
Cutting Off = Scattering (apostasy

1st visit = 1800 BC - 400 BC Jacob (Israel) to Malachi (Old Testament)
2nd visit = 30 AD - 100 AD House of Israel during time of Christ and Apostles (New Testament)
3rd visit = 1820 AD - Our Day
4th visit = Our Day - Second Coming
What were Sherem’s motives for teaching? (p. 169) How did he accomplish them? (Jacob 7:2-5) Did he believe the scriptures? (Jacob. 7:10) What happened to him?
His motives for teaching was to overthrow the doctrine of Christ and to shake Jacob from the faith

He accomplished his motives by preaching that there would be no Christ, and using much flattery and power of speech

He said that he believed the scriptures, yet he asked for a sign

He asked for a sign, was struck down by God, denied the things he had taught, admitted he had been deceived by the devil, and died.
What change happened in record keeping around 130 B.C.? (Handout: Nephite record keepers, appendix p. 32) What happened to the small plates? Where was the religious part of the record kept after 130 B.C.?
Amaleki (the prophet) had the plates. He had no son to give them to so he gave them to King Benjamin. From then on the history of the people and the religious writings were kept on the large plates.

When Amaleki gave the plates to King Benjamin he said that the small plates were full. So they were put with the rest of the records.

After 130 BC the religious part of the record was kept on the large plates along with the historical part.
Who was Zedekiah’s son who escaped the Babylonian captivity?
Mulek. He escaped from captivity and sailed to the promised land (America)
What was the information on the stone brought to Mosiah? Where did it come from?
The information on the stone told of the Jaredites that come from the Tower of Babel (2200 BC). It also told of Coriantumr, the last Jaredite survivor, that had been found by the Mulekites.
How did Mormon say he obtained the plates from which he made his record?
Amaleki gave them to King Benjamin, King Benjamin put them with the other (large) plates, they were handed down by the kings from generation to generation until they fell into Mormon's hands.
Why did Mormon write “Words of Mormon”?
The Words of Mormon are Mormon's explanation for why he is attaching the small (these) plates to the golden (remainder) plates
What is the definition of the “mysteries of God”?
A mystery is a truth that cannot be known except through divine revelation. A sacred secret
How is the natural man an enemy to God? (Mosiah 3:19, p. 193) When does a person become carnal, sensual, devilish? At birth?
Natural man = Fallen man

A man who remains fallen and carnal is an enemy to God.

Natural man = the un-regenerated, unclean, unforgiving man. The proud, externally driven, taking cues from external world man.

They aren't carnal, sensual, and devilish at birth, but they are born with the capacity to become so.
What does it mean in Mosiah 4:7 that the Atonement was prepared “from the foundations of the world”
The effects of the Atonement were in place before the world was formed since the past, present, and future are as though they are all present with God.
Describe the expedition of Zeniff. Describe the expedition of Limhi’s men. (Mosiah 8:7-11; 9:1-11; 21:25-28; Handout: Travels Between Nephi and Zarahemla, appendix p. 35 #1, #14; p. 200)
Zeniff left Zarahemla and went to the land of Nephi. He had made a deal with the Lamanite king to live in the land of Nephi which was controlled by the Lamenites. Zeniff is made King, is righteous, and reigns 30 years.

Because they are in oppressive bondage, Limhi sends a search party to look for Zarahemla. They discover the Jaredite ruins
What were the 3 major traditions that caused the Lamanite hatred toward the Nephites?
They taught their children that:
1. Nephi had usurped the ruling power
2. Nephi had left them in the wilderness
3. Nephi had stolen the records
What charges were brought against Abinadi? (p. 209 chart) What Old Testament chapter did he quote in its entirety to Noah’s court?
Charges:
1. Reviled the King
2. False prophet
3. Blasphemy

Isaiah chapter 53
What does Abinadi mean? (p. 208) What things were included in his message to Noah’s court concerning bondage, deliverance, 10 commandments, resurrection, Law of Moses?
Abinadi = "my father (Christ) is present before you"

He taught them the ten commandments, starting with "Thou shalt have no other gods before me. He told them that they needed to repent or they would be brought into bondage and none would deliver them save it be the Lord the Almighty God. He taught them that the Law of Moses was a type of things to come (Christ). It contained specific daily performances that were supposed to help them deduce principles. He taught the priests of repentance and resurrection to teach them that if they didn't repent they wouldn't be part of the first resurrection.
What is the meaning of Mosiah 14 verse 10?
It pleased the Lord (Jehovah or Christ) to bruise him (Jesus). Jesus as Jehovah, in his role as Father, sent himself in his role as Son to be "bruised" for us. He made his soul an offering (was crucified), shall see his seed (he will see his prophets and those who listened to the prophets in the spirit world after his death), he shall prolong his days (he will be resurrected, live again, and "prolong" his days).
What did Abinadi teach concerning who shall be Christ’s seed?
The seed of Christ =
1. Whosoever has heard the words of the prophets
2. All those who have hearkened to their words
3. Those who believed that the Lord will redeem them
4. Those that have looked forward to a remission of their sins
5. All the prophets since the world began
How is Christ both the Father and the Son? V. 4 “They are one God” (Mosiah 15:1-7, p. 213, 214) In what three ways is he considered “the Father”?
Christ is the Father because:
1. A father begets life. Jesus gave us eternal life through the atonement. Through him we are "born again".
2. Fathers create. George Washington is the "father" of the United States of America. Jesus created the world.
3. Jesus speaks and acts for the Father as though he were the Father.

He is the Son because he dwelleth in the flesh and because he was conceived by the power of God the Father.

He is the Father because he subjected his flesh as the Son to the will of the Father (Christ as the Father)
Which two groups of people are included in the first resurrection? This includes people from Adam’s day down to what point in time? In other words, when does the first resurrection end?
The first resurrection is Celestial people from Adam to second coming (Morning), and Terrestrial people from Adam to the second coming and Celestial people born during the Millennium (Afternoon). The first resurrection ends after the millennium.

The Last resurrection is Telestial people from Adam to the end of the millennium and the sons of perdition
What is the meaning of “Mormon”?
Egyptian "mon" = good. More + mon = Mormon = "more good"
Did Alma baptize himself? When did he receive his authority?
He is thought to have had the priesthood before he was corrupted by king Noah. When he baptized himself with Helam that was not a case of Alma baptizing himself but a token to the Lord of his humility.

The book of Mormon doesn't say when he got his authority, it could have been by King Zeniff, Abinadi, or someone else who held it. It could been an angel, but only if there were no mortals with the authority on Earth
How was Abinadi’s prophecy concerning Noah fulfilled?
When Noah burned Abinadi to death he prophesied that Noah would die the same way. When the city was attacked Noah convinced the priests to run away and leave their wives and children. Later they were mad at him for making them do that and so they burned him to death, just like Abinadi prophesied.
How were Limhi’s people reunited with the Nephites in Zarahemla? P. 227 (Mosiah 22:7-16) Be whom were Limhi’s people baptized? Where were they?
They got the guards drunk, and escaped through the back pass to Zarahemla. The Lamanite army got lost and couldn't find them.

Alma baptized them in the Waters of Mormon
Describe the two major “Flash backs” in the book of Mosiah. (appendix p. 31) Which groups of people does each involve?
First flashback is to the time of Zeniff. It goes back 80 years from Ammon and Limhi (121 BC) back to Zeniff (200 BC)

Second flashback is to the story of Alma the Elder in the Wilderness. It goes from Limhi (121 BC) back to Alma in the wilderness (145 BC)
Do we know how far apart Zarahemla and Nephi were? What information is used to calculate the distance?
A 20 day journey.

Alma baptized in the Waters of Mormon, which were on the edge of the land of Nephi. From there to Helam it was an 8-day journey. The scriptures say that the journey from Helam to Zarahemla was a 12-day journey. 8 +12 = 20-day journey
What were the conditions for Alma’s people in Helam under Amulon’s rule?
Amulon put hard tasks and task masters over the Nephites. Nephites found praying were executed. They prayed in their hearts, once a covenant was made the Lord made their burdens light, He visited His people in their afflictions, He strengthened them so that they could bear their burdens with ease. The Lord delivered them by causing a deep sleep to come upon the Lamanites, the Nephites escaped, traveled 12 days in the wilderness and arrived in Zarahemla
What did the Lamanite king have Amulon’s priests teach the Lamanites? What was included in their teaching? (v. 4) What was not in their teaching?
The Lamanite king had Amulon's priests teach the Lamanites only the Nephite language. He did not have them teach concerning the Lord their God, the Law of Moses, or the words of Abinadi
. Why did the rising generation of Mosiah II’s day refuse to join the church and not believe in Christ? (p. 235) (3 reasons)
Three reasons why the rising generation failed to believe in the Coming of Christ, the resurrection, and would not be baptized.
1. Unbelief in the word of God. They wouldn't even try to exercise faith.
2. Hard hearts/pride. Disobedient hearts.
3. They would not pray.
Alma saw an angel. Why did the angel come? (Mosiah 27:8-14) What did Wilford Woodruff say about desiring to see angels?
The Lord sent an angel because he needed the angel to do a work that could only be performed by an angel, it was necessary for the angel to teach him something that he had not been taught.

He said that the Holy Ghost is what every Saint of God needs. It is far more important that a man should have that gift than he should have the ministration of angels, unless it is necessary for the angel to teach him something that he has not been taught.
What motivated Mosiah II’s decision to change the form of government?
He had no one to confer the kingdom on. He told the people that there is no guarantee a king will be righteous, a king might not be just, the king could turn out like King Noah, it takes a lot of bloodshed to dethrone a king. He had just finished translating the Jaredite record where many were killed by wicked Kings.
What is the advantage of a government run by “the voice of the people?”
The majority of the people will choose what is right
What were the different forms of government experienced by the Nephites from the time Lehi left Jerusalem?
1. 600 BC = Patriarchal (Lehi)
2. 550 BC = Kings (the Nephis)
3. 91 BC = Judges
What roles did Alma II fulfill in Zarahemla?
He was appointed to be the first chief judge and priest. He became something like the prophet and the president combined.
What false doctrine did Nehor preach? What happened to him?
Nehor taught priestcraft. He taught what he termed to be the word of God. He taught that every priest and teacher ought to be popular and be supported by the people. He taught that all mankind should be saved at the last day.
Priestcraft is defined as preaching false doctrine for the sake of riches and honor.

He killed a righteous man named Gideon and was sentenced to death
Who was Amlici? What was his background? What did his followers do? (v. 9) What resulted? (v. 18,19) What became of him?
Amlici was a cunning man, he was after the order of Nehor and he drew many people away after him. He was guilty of priestcraft. His followers sought to make him king. He was voted down. He intended to destroy the church. His followers made him king anyway. There was a huge war where 19,094 people were killed. Alma slew him by the sword.
Explain the difference between a mark and a curse. (Alma 3:6-19; 2 Nephi 5:20; p. 249, 250) When Alma saw the problems in Zarahemla what did he decide to do to solve them?
The mark was an outward way of distinguishing them. The mark of the Lamanites was the dark skin.

The curse was being cut off from God's presence. We bring the curse of God upon ourselves whenever we fail to qualify for the blessings - the protecting power of the Almighty and the guidance and direction of his spirit.

To solve the problems Alma gave up the judgement seat to Nephihah. Alma did this so that he could go forth among the people to preach the word of God, stir them up in remembrance of their duty, pull down pride, craftiness, and contentions, and bear down in pure testimony against them
What does it mean to be born of God? (Alma 5:14-62) What have modern leaders said about this process? Are ordinances necessary? Must we have an experience like Alma or Enos?
Being born again comes by the spirit of God through ordinances. We are born again as we die as pertaining to unrighteousness and when we live as pertaining to the things of the Spirit. It is a process. We are born again by degrees to added light and added knowledge and added desires for righteousness as we keep the commandments. We must have a change of heart. Experiences like Alma and Enos are the exception, rather than the rule. We don't need to have experiences like Alma or Enos
Why does Alma 7:10 say Jesus will be born at Jerusalem when he was born in Bethlehem?
The angel who came to the shepherds said that Jesus would be born in the city of David. Scriptures show that the city of David is Jerusalem. Bethlehem is about six miles from Jerusalem, so it's like someone who lives in Sandy saying they're from Salt Lake
What did Alma tell the people of Gideon concerning the Atonement? What can the Atonement remove?
The atonement covers more than sin only. The atonement helps us overcome imperfections that result from the fall of Adam.

The atonement may remove sickness (physical or mental), pain (physical, mental, emotional), grief (disappointment, heartache, sorrow), infirmities (physical or mental)

What was unique about the Nephite monetary system? Was the Nephite manner of reckoning “after the manner of the Jews”? (Alma 11:4-10) pp. 263. What is a markos? Are coins mentioned in the record?
It wasn't like the jews, it was a system of weights and measures. They had a 1,2,4,7 system.

A markos is a series of brass cups inside one another that can be used for both weights and measures. It is a system used in Guatemala.

The record says they did not use coins

What did Alma and Brigham Young teach concerning “the greater portion of the word” and secrets?
If God reveals us His word or His secrets then we should not tell them to other people. If we keep His secrets then he will reveal more to us.
What did Alma teach concerning the pre-mortal life? (Alma 13:1-5) What did President Harold B. Lee add?
Alma taught that we were called and prepared in the pre-mortal life on account of our good works. He taught that in the pre-mortal existence we were all on the same standing.

President Harold B. Lee added that what we received here in this earth life was given to us according to our merits of our conduct before we came here. We came to the family we were born into, the nations we live in, as a reward for the kinds of lives we lived before we came here
What was Ammonihah like? What happened to Alma and Amulek there? How did they escape?
Ammonihah was wicked. Alma and Amulek were bound, taken, and questioned before the chief judge of the land (this judge was of the order of Nehor, vs. 16) and also other judges and lawyers (vs. 18). The people testified against them, they witnessed women, children, and scriptures being cast into the fire. They escaped when the prison walls fell down.
What principles concerning the suffering of the righteous come from Alma 14:11? What did President Brigham Young teach about persecution? (p. 272) What became of Zeezrom after he tried to bribe Amulek?
Suffering is a necessary part of mortality in the plan of salvation. It is through suffering and sorrow, toil and tribulation that we gain the education that we come here to acquire and which will make us more like our Father and Mother in Heaven.

President Brigham Young taught that Joseph could not have been perfected, though he had lived a thousand years, if he had received no persecution. If he had lived a thousand years, and led this people, and preached the Gospel without persecution, he would not have been perfected as well as he was at the age of 39 years.

Zeezrom became sick with a burning fever, he accepted Christ, was healed by Alma, then baptized by Alma.
What happened to Zeezrom? (Alma 15:8-12) What happened to Ammonihah?
He leaped upon his feet and began to walk. The knowledge of this went throughout the land. Zeezrom was baptized.

Ammonihah was desolated. Every living soul of the Ammonihahites was destroyed. It was destroyed in one day (no long siege or battle), carcasses were mangled by dogs and wild beasts, the scent was so bad that no one went near there for years, and it was called the Desolation of Nehors

Who was Lamoni? (Alma 17-18) Who was his Father? (Alma 20) Why was Lamoni’s Father interested in being taught the gospel? (Alma 20:26-27) What doctrines were they taught? (Alma 18:36-39; 22:12-14) (p. 283) What traditions of the Lamanites did Ammon and Aaron have to overcome to have success?
Lamoni was king of the Land of Ismael. Lamoni's father was king over all of the land.

He was interested because he saw that Ammon had no desire to destroy him and that he had great love for his son. He was astonished by the words that had been spoken and wanted to learn of them.

He taught them the basic doctrines of the gospel: the creation, the fall, and the atonement (the three pillars of eternity)

He had to overcome the Lamanites tradition of hating Nephi for ruling over them, separating themselves from them, and stealing the brass plates
Describe the teaching pattern exemplified by Ammon and Aaron.
1. Teach with simplicity
2. Bear testimony
3. Teach from the scriptures
4. Instill a desire in the investigator to pray
What principle is Mormon teaching in Alma 24:26-30? What two groups of people does he use as an example?
It is worse to have been enlightened by God and have great knowledge and then fall away into sin and transgression than it is to never have known the gospel at all.
He uses the Amulonites and the Amalekites as an example
What were the original feelings of the brethren in Zarahemla concerning the initial request of Mosiah’s sons to go on missions?
They laughed them to scorn and said they would rather take up arms against the Lamenites to destroy them than preach to them.
Who were the Anti-Nephi-Lehi’s? (Alma 23:13-18; 24:16-26, p. 292) Where did they end up living? To what was their name changed?

The Nephities gave them the land of Jershon to live in.

They were called the people of Ammon
