Name the 4 types of bonds? |
1) Covalent Bonds 2) Ionic Bonds 3) Hydrogen Bonds 4) Van Der Waals Interactions |
What are Covalent Bonds? |
Sharing of a pair of valence electrons by two atoms |
What is a single covalent bond? |
Sharing of one pair of valence electrons (And has free rotation) |
What is a double covalent bond? |
Sharing of two pairs of valence electrons. (And has a flat surface (plainer)) |
What is an Ionic Bond? |
Attraction between a cation and an anion. |
Define Cation |
Positively charged ion |
Define Anion |
Negatively charged ion. |
What are compounds formed by ionic bonds called? |
Salts. |
What bonds are stronger covalent or ionic? |
Covalent. Ionic bonds and hydrogen bonds are weak chemical bonds but are very important. |
What are Hydrogen Bonds? |
It forms when a hydrogen atom covalently bonded to one electronegative atom is also attracted to another electronegative atom. |
Describe Van Der Waals Interactions? |
Attractions between molecules that are close together. Minimize surface area spent interacting with polar bonds (Van Der Waals are non-polar) |
What is a Dipole? |
Partial + and partial - charge |
Polar Covalent Bonds? |
PONS with Hydrogen |
Anything with PONS is polar or non-polar? |
Polar. |
