What happens in fission in chemistry?

A covalent bond is broken

What are the 2 types of bond fission?

Homolytic and heterolytic fission

What happens in homolytic fission?

The bond breaks equally as one electron from the bonding pair goes to each atom to make 2 radicals

What is a radical?

A species with an unpaired electron

What illustrates that electrons move?

There are two half arrows, one from the bond to one atom and one from the bond to another

What happens in heterolytic fission?

The bond breaks unequally as both electrons from the bonding pair go to one atom. This makes a positive and negative ion

What represents this movement of electrons?

A full arrow

What properties must the arrow have?

It must be curved and must touch the bond (line)

What are the 5 types of organic reactions?

Addition reaction

Substitution reaction

Elimination reaction

Oxidation reaction

Condensation reaction

What happens in an addition reaction?

Two molecules react to make one product. One molecule adds across the double bond of an unsaturated molecule to make a saturated molecule.

What happens in a substitution reaction?

An atom/ group is replaced by another atom/ group. The number of products and reactants is the same

What happens in elimination?

An atom/ group is removed from a saturated molecule to make an unsaturated molecule

What happens in an oxidation reaction?

Oxygen is added and/or hydrogen is removed from a molecule

What happens in a condensation reaction?

A H2O molecule is lost when two molecules join together.
