Major Organ: Skin
Appendages:structures attached to a main part & glands
Primary Function: Protection
Protects from invasion of harmful bacteria
Regulates body temp.
Skeletal System
Primary Organs: Bones
Includes not only bones but related tissues such as cartilage & ligaments.
Cartilage can cushion bones that are linked together and act as a connection from one bone to another.
Ligaments: bands of fibrous tissue that help hold bones together.
Joints: connections between two or more bones
Function: Protection and support framework
Muscular System
Voluntary Muscle: has the ability to contract when stimulated by conscious nerve regulation
Primary Function: Movement also maintains the posture & provides heat to maintain our body temp.
Tendon: part of a muscle organ that attaches the muscle to a bone.
Smooth Muscle:walls of hollow organs such as the stomach.
Cardiac Muscle: wall of the heart
Involuntary Muscle: they are stimulated by subconscious regulation.
Nervous System
Contain the spinal cord, brain & nerves.
Brain & Spinal Cord make up the CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM.
They control the whole nervous system.
Cranial & Spinal Nerves make up the PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM.
Functions: 1. Communication between body organs
2. Integration of body functions
3. Control of body functions
4. Recognition of sensory stimuli
Endocrine System
Composed of glands that secrete chemicals known as HORMONES directly into the blood.
Controls growth, regulates metabolism, reproduction & other body activities.
Pituitary,Pineal,& Hypothalamus glands are located in the skull.
Thyroid & Parathyroid glands are in the neck
Thymus gland in the thoracic cavity.
Adrenal & Pancreas glands are found in the abdominal cavity.
Cardiovascular System
Consist of heart and arteries, veins and capillaries.
Primary function is transportation
Helps regulate body temperature
