Body Cavities

Hollow spaces in the body that contain internal organs (viscera)

Two main cavities

Ventral (front), Dorsal (back)

Ventral cavity

Contains the Thoracic & Abdominopelvic cavity

Dorsal Cavity

Contains the Cranial & Spinal Cavity

Thoracic Cavity

Protects the heart & lungs.

Contains the Pleural & Mediastinum

Organs in the Thoracic Cavity

Lungs, trachea, bronchi, heart, esophogus, thymus, aorta, veins, arteries, capillaries

Pleural Cavity

Contains double lining. Visceral pleura covers organs. Parietal pleura lines the cavity

Mediastinum Cavity

Contains the heart. Parietal pericardial membrane lines cavity. Visceral pericardial membrane covers heart.

Abdominopelvic Cavity

Contains the Abdominal & Pelvic Cavity.

Diaphragm

Separates the Thoracic and Abdominopelvic Cavities

Abdominal Cavity

Contains organs that maintain homeostasis. Lined with parietal peritoneal membrane (double folded membranes). Viceral peritoneal membrane covers organs (mesentery).

Pelvic Cavity

Contains reproductive organs.

Organs in the Abdominopelvic Cavity

Stomach, Intestines, Liver, Gallbladder, Pancreas, Appendix, Kidneys, Spleen, Aorta, Vena Cava, Blood Vessel

Quadrants of the Abdominopelvic Cavity

Identify specific locations for clinical purposes; use vertical and horizontal imaginary lines

RUQ= Right upper quadrant
LUQ= Left upper quadrant
RLQ= Right lower quadrant

LLQ= Left lower quadrant

Regions of the Abdominopelvic Cavity

L. Iliac Region

Dorsal Cavity Divisions

Contains the Cranial & Spinal Cavities

Cranial Cavity

Contains the brain, pituitary gland, pineal gland.

meninges (membranes) covering brain. Skull bones

Spinal Cavity

Contains: Spinal cord, peripheral nerves. Meninges (membranes) covering spinal cord. spinal cavity is formed by the vertebral bones.

Organs in the Dorsal

Brain, pituitary gland, pineal gland, spinal cord, perpheral nerves

Divisions of the spinal column

Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar, Sacral, Coccygeal

Spinal Column Division: Cervical

Neck (C1-C7)

Spinal Column Division: Thoracic

Chest (T1-T12)

Spinal Column Division: Lumbar

Lower Back (L1-L5)

Spinal Column Division: Sacral

Hip Regions (S1-S5)

Spinal Column Division: Coccygeal

Hip Region (Coccyx)
