72 Cards in this Set

  • Front
  • Back
Eversion
a turning around or inside out
Esophageal hiatus
located ventral to the aortic hiatus through the crura. The Esophagus, the ventral and dorsal vagal trunks and esophageal vessels enter the abdomen here.
Dorsal (frontal) plane
A plane perpendicular to both median & Transverse planes, unequally dividing body into dorsal & ventral portions.
Frontal
Pertaining to forehead, or area of the head abv the eyes where the frontal bone and frontal sinuses are located.
Flexion
Decrease angle.
Example: bend knee
Extension
Increase angle
Example: straighten leg
Dorsal (directional & positional)
Toward back or topline. Away from ground. Opposite the Palmar & Plantar surfaces.
Distal
Situated away from point of origin or attachment.
Away from trunk
Cupula
Cranial Part of the dome of the diaphragm.
Crural
Pertaining to the rear leg btwn the Stifle and the Tarsus.
Diaphragm
Dome shaped muscle separating the Thoracic and Abdominal cavities, innervated by the Phrenic nerve. Principle muscle concerned w/ respiration.
Deep
Away from surface or internal.
Crura (lumbar part) of the Diaphragm
Dorsal part of the diaphragm consisting of the right & left Crura. The Crura connect to the Ventral side of the Lumbar Vertbral bodies & form Aortic hiatus.
Cranial/ (directional & positional) Anterior
Toward front of head.
Aterior: towards the front
Hiatus
term for gap, cleft or opening
inferior
Lowermost, below or toward the tail.
Human terms: lower replaces ventral for structures of head
Inguinal
Groin or medial aspect of he rear leg where the limb is attached to the torso.
Inguinal Canal
Cleft through the abdomen wall that allows blood vessels, nerves and the spermatic cord to pass through the abdomen wall
Lateral
Away from midline, farther from median plane.
Internal
Closer to the center of a structure.
Lumbar
Pertaining to lumbar vertebrae or region around the vertebrae
Longitudinal Section
A cut parallel to the long axis of an organ or limb; longitudinal sections may be cut in the median, sagittal or frontal planes.
Medial
Toward midline
Median Plane
Divides body into 2 equal right & left halves.
Nasal
Pertaining to the nose
Oblique
At an angle or pertaining to an angle.
Oribital
Pertaining to the bony eye socket/ orbit.
Palmar
Caudal aspect of front limb distal to carpal joint.
Patellar
Pertaining to the patella (knee cap)
Pelivic Cavity
Space bounded by the 2 hip bones,, the Sacram and the first 2 caudal vertebrae.
It contains the rectum and canal of pelvic parts of the reproductive and urinary viscera.
Pelvic inlet
The communication btwn the abdomenal and Pelvic cavities.
Perineal
Pertaining to the region btwn or surrounding the anus and external genitalia
Perineum
Region btwn or surrounding the anus and external genitalia
Peripheral
near the surface of the body; pertaining to or situated near the outer areas or surface of the body or structure
Peritoneal
pertaining to the cavity inside the abdomen.
Peritoneal part of the Pelvic cavity
cranial portion lined by pouches of the abdominal peritoneum
Plantar
Caudal aspect of rear limb.
Distal to tarsal joint.
Pleural
Pertaining to the cavity inside the chest and the membranes that line this cavity.
Pronation
the act of turning the forepaw outward from the body.
Proximal
situated closer to point of origin or attachment.
Nearest the trunk
Recumbency
describes the position of a patient required to achieve the projection.
Retroperitoneal part of the pelvic cavity
the caudal portion not lined by abdominal peritoneum.
Rostral
toward nose or beak
Rotation
the process of turning around an axis.
Sacral
Pertaining to the Sacram, the fused vertebrae by which the pelvis is attached to the backbone.
Saggintal plane
Divides body into unequal right & left sections/ slices.
Parallel to medial plane
Sternal part of the diaphragm
the ventral muscular part
Stifle
the femorotibial joint which is comprised of the femur, tibia, and fibula and the patella. This is equivalent of the human knee but the word "stifle" is used in vet medicine.
Superior
Uppermost, abv or toward head.
Head terms: Replaces Dorsal for head structures.
Tendinous center of the diaphragm
V-shaped aponeurotic (tendinous) center of the diaphragm.
Thoracic
Pertaining to the Thorax or chest, the thoracic vertebrae or region around these vertebrae
Transverse plane
divides body into equal cranial & Caudal halves also crosses an organ or limb at a rt. angle to it's long axis.
Transverse section
(cross section)
A cut through the transverse plane of a structure
Vascular lacunae
opening out of the abdominal cavity to the pelvic limb for passage of nerves and vessels
Ventral
underside of belly.
toward ground
Abaxial
further from the longitudinal axis of a limb.
Example: outside of a digit is the abaxial side
Abdominal cavity
Space w/in the trunk btwn the diaphragm and pelvic cavity
Antebrachium
Distal area of the forelimb; Area btwn the elbow and carpus.
Aortic hiatus
Opening in the dorsal part of the diaphragm for the passage of the abdominal aorta. Btwn Crura & lumbar vertebrae
Axial
Closer to the longitudinal line
Axillary
Pertaining to the area on the medial side where the forelimb/ frnt leg meets torsoe.
"arm pit area"
Brachial
Pertaining to the Proximal area of the front legs of an animal, abv elbow joint.
