Texas, 1897, TEXAS, hoboed through south all the way to VA recorded in chicago in 1926, played clear cord, more improv than Henry Thomas, taught leadbelly, shocking titles, broke time, clear cord, black snake moan

"ragtime texas", TEXAS? 1874, played before blues actually formed, started in minstrel shows, more of an entertainer, accompanied himself with pan-pipe, not very improvisational

1902, MS, DELTA originally a preacher, heard blues from Patton, at 21 started playing. not accomplished guitarist, emphasized the bottleneck, traveled with patton, used slide to emphasize voice.
Tommy Johnson
1897 MS, DELTA, worked with charley patton, recorded in 1928, used falsetto that was popular, told of learning the guitar from the devil.
Blind Blake
1883, FA, PIEDMONT. Influenced by ragtime and jazz, developed "3 hand playing" which used thumb to fingerpick and emulate ragtime bass. recorded in 1920s
Sophie Tucker
1884, Russia, CLASSIC performed in minstrel shows in blackface, "coon shouter". First sang the blues "some of these days" 1911, very klezmer feel, tin pan alley. Replaced by Mamie Smith (1883), smith had nyc advantage (race record).
Leadbelly
1889, LA, EARLY BLUES, texas, worked in Shreveport (fanin st), LA, much like storyville. visited barrelhouses and brothels, picked up skillz. Met Lemon 1912 in dallas, stayed in texas, was lead boy, learned from lemon, after killing man, sent to prison, forced to play on cue for rest of life
Ma Rainey
1886, GA, CLASSIC. Played in minstrel shows, played blues in 1902. w/ minstrel in 1912, retired to go to mexico, came back in 1923 to record, then with georgia wild cats jazz band, VERY sexual, lesbian, theatrical, "prove it on me", jug bands
Bessie Smith
TN, 1894, started very early (9), sang with ma rainey, recorded in 1923, heavily influenced by ma rainey, very popular, died early in car crash
Skip James
Bentonia, MS, 1902, DELTA, pastor's kid, sang like tommy johnson, more haunting, known as "bentonia sound", used eerie tuning as well, very educated
charley patton
born late 1880s, MS, EARLY DELTA, hated work, bragged about sexual prowess, hated by contemporaries, "broke time", extremely skilled, very much a showman, learned from sam chatmon, learned to be musicianeer, didn't just right about himself "high water everywhere", used blues as form of personal communication
