Hepatitis A (HAV)
*Causes inflammation of liver
*Transmitted by fecal or oral routes through close personal contact or contaminated food/water
*dark urine, light stools, fatigue, jaundice and fever
Hepatitis B
*resulting in swelling, soreness and loss of normal
*fatigue, weakness, nausea, abdominal pain, headache, fever, & possibly jaundice
*HBV can survive in blood & fluids, in dried blood & on contaminated surfaces for at least 1 week
-vaccine yes
Hepatitis C (HCV)
•80% of those infected have no S&S
•May be jaundice, have mild abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nausea, fatigue, muscle/joint pain, and/or dark urine
-no vaccine
Hepatitis D (HDV)
-causes inflammation of the liver
-contact with infected blood, needles or sexual contact with individuals that have HBV
-You can only get hepatitis D if you are already infected with hepatitis B
Hepatitis E (HEV)
-Transmitted through fecal and oral routes from contaminated water supplies
HIV (human immunodeficiency disease)
Fatigue, weight loss, muscle or joint pain, painful or swollen glands, night sweats & fever
•Antibodies detected in blood tests within 1 yr of exposure
•May be 8-10 years before signs & symptoms develop
•Most that acquire HIV will develop acquired AIDS
AIDS
Collection of signs and symptoms that are recognized as the effects of an infection
•No protection against the simplest infection
•Positive test for HIV cannot predict when the individual will show symptoms of AIDS
•50% develop AIDS w/in 10 years of HIV infection
•After contracting AIDS, people generally die within 2 years of symptoms developing
