Elastic Arteries |
Large vessels with a thick tunica media. Receive blood directly from the heart e.g. Aorta and its major branches |
Muscular Arteries |
Medium vessels with a thick tunica media. Control blood flow to organs e.g. most named arteries in the body |
Arterioles |
Thick tunica media for vasomotor functions and a narrow lumen |
Metarterioles |
Lumen of similar diameter to that of the capillary it supplies. Single layer of smooth muscle surrounding the tunica intima. Control distribution of blood to the capillary beds. |
Capillaries |
Single layer of endothelium. Allow passage of a single erythrocyte. |
Venules |
Very permeable wall consisting of endothelium and elastic tissue. Drain blood from the capillaries. |
Veins |
Larger lumen with a thinner tunica media. Much more variable structure than arteries. Carry blood at a low pressure, surrounding muscles and arteries may help to force blood along. Have regular valves to prevent back flow of deoxygenated blood. |
