What are the 3 best things about the BIOMAT.NET website?
The main (European) website linking many different types of biomaterials activities – conferences, research findings, companies, 1)The lists of organizations, companies, academic institutions, books, journals etc. 2)The Forum (although not very active….). 3) Biomaterial journals impact factor/ranking. 4) Events calender
What is the Society for Biomaterials? What activities does it offer?
The Society For Biomaterials is a professional society that promotes advances in all phases of materials research and development by encouragement of cooperative educational programs, clinical applications, and professional standards in the biomaterials field. Gives awards, holds conferences and meetings, publications eg Ratner textbook, video library, lists of companies & products (resource guide), bookstore, job listings– matching services.
How is the European Society for Biomaterials related to the Society for Biomaterials?
It is a sister society. Both are members of The International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Sciences and Engineering (IUS-BSE) (http://www.worldbiomaterials.org/) at its conception in 1979.
Is there a Swedish or Scandinavian Society for Biomaterials?
Yes. Next meeting will be in Gothenburg in May 2011.
What is Göteborg Bio?
GöteborgBIO focuses on four areas:1) Institute for Biomaterials and Cell Therapy (IBCT), with the mission to initiate and run research and development projects within biomaterials and cell therapy in collaboration with companies within the region. 2) Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases Network (CVM), focuses on stimulating innovation and growth within the segment by concentrating on the commercialization of expertise input in the early research phase. 3) Göteborg International Bioscience business School (GIBBS) offers tomorrow´s leaders within the biomedical field a master´s programme of highest international standard. 4) Sahlgrenska Science Park, with its incubator, promotes the commercialization process and provides business counseling and laboratory facilities for research based innovations and emerging companies.
What projects does the IBCT, Institute for Biomaterials and Cell Therapy, in Göteborg currently have running?
technologies. presently running three research projects:
Project Alpha: in the development of bone-anchored implants, it is of profound importance to be able to study in detail the boundary zone between artificial material and living tissue. The
purpose of this project is to apply modern analytical methods from e.g. molecular biology, to get time resolved information on the critical biological processes in this boundary zone.
Project Beta: In this project new methods are being developed to dramatically increase spatial and elemental resolution when performing microscopic studies of the boundary zone between
artificial material and living tissue. These methods render themselves for scientific studies aimed at development of new implants, as well as quality control tools for regular production.
Project Delta: The interaction between artificial material and soft tissue is not as well understood as the interaction between artificial material and bone tissue. The purpose of this project is to develop an in vitro model for studies of cell-to-cell and cell-to-biomaterial interactions in the boundary zone between soft tissue and artificial materials. The clinical applications of this project can be found within e.g. wound care and skin penetrating implants.
What is BIOMATCELL (in Göteborg) ?
VINN Excellence center in biomaterials and cell therapy.
The overall aim of the research program is to generate new ideas and concepts for clinical treatments based on biomaterials or biomaterials associated cell therapy, with a focus on applications in the musculoskeletal system.
BIOMATCELL pursues an integrated research approach encompassing three research areas:
1. New materials and concepts for modification of the bioactivity of implants
2. Enhanced bone and cartilage regeneration using combinations of biomaterials and cell therapy in vitro and in vivo
3. New technologies for the pre-clinical screening, clinical diagnosis and monitoring of implants
What does the BRC – Biomaterials Research Center at Göteborg University do? Can you become a member?
The aim of BRC, the Biomaterials Research Centre at the University of Gothenburg, is to be a collaborative organisation for biomaterials research in Sweden. BRC’s activities are directed towards supporting basic research, pre-clinical and clinical research as well as studies in biomaterials. It is also BRC’s objective to establish good relations with Swedish industry engaged in biomaterial activities.
Yes, you can become a member.
