plasma
fluid material composed of proteins, electrolytes, hormones, waste, nutrients.
erythrocyte
red blood cell, produced in bone marrow, lack nuclei and mitochondria, packed with the protein hemoglobin, flexible
leukocyte
white blood cell, consists of neutraphils eosinohphils, basophils, which are granular and lymphocytes and monocytes which are agranular.
platelet
helps clot blood
buffy coat
thin layer between plasma and erthrocytes, consists of platelets and leukocytes
hematocrit
when erythrocytes make up 45% of blood and the top 55% is plasma.
electrolytes
they're in plasma
albumin
a protein in plasma, made in liver, maintains blood pressure
globulin
protein in plasma, made by liver and involved in coagulation and antibodes
complement factor
inflammation and destruction of microorganisms
fribinogen
protein in plasma, made in liver, involved in clotting
sickle cell anemia
inherited disorder, alters hemoglobin, makes the cell rigid, cell has a short life span, usually results in iron deficiency
Neutrophils
Defend against bacteria, their death results in pus, multi-lobed nucleus, most common type, do not conatin lysosomes
Eosinophils
deal with parasitic infections, bi-lobed nucleus, full of pink-orange granules, predominant cell in allergic reactions--asthma, hay-fever, hives
Basophils
chief responder to allergic reactions by releasing histamine, bi or tri lobed nucleus, many granules makes nucleus hard to see
Lymphocyte
B cells - make antibody, T cells are helper cells, small amount of clear cytoplasm, deep staining nucleus
Monocyte
vaccuum cleaner, lack granules, kidney shaped nucleus
hemopoiesis
mature red blood cells have a short life span and have to continuously be replaced, derived from the stem cells located in bone marrow
pluripotent
capable of cell division and self renewal
bone marrow
red or yellow, red color is produced by blod and hemopoietic cells, yellow -- filled with fat cells
leukemia
ancer of the white blood cells
lymphoma
cancer of the lymphocytes
aplastic anemia
bone marrow does not produce enough red blood cells
