Cancer

Uncontrolled cell growth

Benign

"non cancerous" growth- remains in tissue of origin

Malignant

cancerous, is able to spread from tissue of origin into another tissue type

MPF= Mitosis promoting facor

2 proteins: cyclin & cyclin dependent Kinase

Cyclin levels are extremely low at the beginning of cell cycle as it is produced, attached to MPF and is phosphorylated which inactivates it

At the end of G2 (MPF) are very high

Activated MPF

-triggers prophase

-causes centrioles to dissemble cytoskeleton, creates spindle fibers

-causes the nuclear membrane to disintegrate

Meiosis

-cell replication of the gametes(sex cells)

-end product: 4 haploid daughter that are all genetically different

-function: reduce # of chromosome in half, create genetic varation

Haploid

1 copy of every chromosome

Diploid

2 copies of every chromosome

Egg(haploid)

23 chromosomes

Sperm(haploid)

23 chromosomes

Homogenous chromosomes

matching chromosomes made of the same gene type

Tetreid

2 homologs pair up at chiasma

Chiasma

point of connection between homologs

Crossing over

exchange of genes between non-sister chromatids
