Homeostasis

A state of balance in which the body's internal environment remains in the normal range

Positive Feedback

Process by which changes cause additional similar changes, producing unstable conditions

Negative Feedback

Mechanism activated by imbalance that corrects the imbalance

Diffusion

Random movement of molecules from a region of high concentration toward one of lower concentration

Osmosis

Movement of water through a semipermeable membrane from the area of greater water concentration to an area of lesser water concentration

Active Transport

Process that requires energy to move a substance across the cell membrane, usually against the concentration gradient

Hypotonic

A solution with a lower osmotic pressure than the solution with which it is compared

Hypertonic

A solution with the greater osmotic pressure than the solution with which it is compared

Isotonic

A solution with the same osmotic pressure as the solution with which it is compared

Exocytosis

Transport of substances out of a cell in membrane bounded vesicles

Endocytosis

Process by which a cell membrane in both substance and draws it into the cell in a vesicle

Phagocytosis

Process by which a cell engulfs and digests solids

Pinocytosis

Process by which a cell engulfs droplets of fluid from its surroundings

Anabolism

Synthesis of larger molecules from smaller ones; anabolic metabolism

Catabolism

Breakdown of large molecules into smaller ones; catabolic metabolism

Dehydration Synthesis

Anabolic process that joins small molecules by releasing the equivalent of a water molecule

Hydrolysis

Enzymatically adding a water molecule to split a molecule into smaller portions
