Inductive Reasoning

A type of logic in which generalizations are based on a large number of specific observations.

Deductive Reasoning

A type of logic in which specific results are predicted from a general premise.

Experiment

A scientific test, carried out under controlled conditions, involving manipulation of one or more factors in a system in order to see the effects of those changes.

Control

In a controlled experiment, a set of subjects that is (or does not receive) the specific factor being tested. Ideally, the control group should be identical to the experimental group in other respects.

Controlled Experiment

An Experiment in which an experimental group is compared with a control group that varies only in the factor being tested.

Experimental Group

A set of subjects that helps (or receives) the specific factor being tested in a controlled experiment.

Binomial

The taxonomic category above the level of genus

Genus

The taxonomic category above level of species

Species

A population or group of populations whose members have the potential to interbreed in nature and produce viable, fertile offspring but do not produce viable, fertile offspring with members of other such groups.

Prokaryote

A type of cell lacking a membrane-enclosed nucleus and membrane-enclosed organelles. Organisms are called prokaryotes.

Eukaryote

A type of cell with a membrane-enclosed nucleus and membrane-enclosed organelles. Organisms are called eukaryotes.

Heterotrophic

An organism that obtains good molecules by eating other organisms or substances derived from them.

Autotroph

An organism that obtains food molecules without eating other organisms or substances derived from other organisms. Autotrophs use energy from the sun or oxidation of inorganic substances to make organic molecules.
