What are the two main cells?
Prokaryotic or Eukaryotic cells
What is considered a prokaryotic cell?
It's a cell that has no true nucleus and no membrane-bounded organelles.
What is considered a eukaryotic cell?
They have true nuclei and their organelles have membranes.
What are ribosomes?
They are small particles that produce the cell's proteins and enzymes. They consists of a small and large subunit.
What is a endoplasmic reticulum?
The ER is a higly convoluted membrane that secretes enzymes and produces other members.
What is a golgi apparatus?
It is made up of many flattened membrane-bound vesicles. It also secretes protein.
What are lysosomes?
Produced by the golgi complex, they are small membrane-bounded bags that are filled with enzymes. These enzymes break down and digest macromolecules.
What is endocytosis?
It's the process of bringing substances into the cell.
What is a vaculoe?
They are large membranous sacs that store food, waste, and other stuff. They can contract and expel water out of the cell, or expand and play a role in cellular elongation.
What is a cytoskeleton?
It is the support structure of the cell. It is associated with three types of fibers: Microtubules, intermediate filaments, and microfilaments.
What are microtubules?
They are thick, hollow rods which are mostly found in the cytoplasm. (Cilia and flagella)
What are intermediate filaments?
Midsize protein fibers.
What are microfilaments?
They are the smallest fibers (Actin - contractile filament in muscle)
What are the two main cell cycles?
Interphase and mitosis.
What are the three parts to interphase?
The S phase, and the two gaps (G1 and G2) before and after the S phase.
What is binary fission
The process in which prokaryotic cells divide.
What are the two possible processes in which eukaryotic divide?
Mitosis or meiosis.
What are the steps in mitosis?
Prophase, metaphase, Anaphase, and telophase.
