Muscles

Muscle cells contract when an electrical impulse from a nerve is applied. They are mainly arranged in pairs.

Respiration Equation

Glucose + Oxygen --> Carbon dioxide + Water + Energy

Effects on body during exercise

The muscles need more oxygen , your heart rate, breathing rate and depth of breathing will all increase. Also the arteries supplying blood to the muscles will dilate, increasing blood flow.

How is a fit person's body different?

The capacity of their lungs is increased, resting heart rate decreased, and breathing rate during exercise decreased.

Reflex actions

Reflexes happen very quickly because the impulses are not routed via the brain and are involuntary.

Stimulus -> receptor -> sensory neuron -> Relay neuron -> Motor neuron -> Effector

Plant Hormones

Auxins control plant growth e.g. the shoot must grow upwards for photosynthesis and the root downwards to collect moisture and nutrients. Geotropism and Gravitropism cause the root to grow downwards. Phototropism is where a plant responds to light by growing towards it. Auxins make roots grow slower and shoots faster. Auxins are broken down by light so there is a higher concentration of them on the side away from the light.
