What is the equation for Photosynthesis

Carbon dioxide + water ~ Glucose + oxygen

Glucose

Used for respiration

Converted to starch for storage

Converted to amino acids to make proteins for growth

Oxygen

Used for respiration

Testing a leaf for starch

Leave in boiling water - stops chemical reactions, kills leaf

Put in boiling ethanol - remove chlorophyll

Dip into hot water - softens leaf, ethanol makes it brittle

Put on white tile, add iodine solution - test for starch - colour change yellow brown-blue black indicates presence of starch

Destarch

Place the plant in a dark cupboard for at least 2 days. If starch is present at the end of the experiment it was made throughout

Testing for carbon dioxide with hydrogen carbonate indicator

Increasing Co2 Yellow

Remaining Co2 Red

Decreasing Co2 Purple

Compensation point

The rate of photosynthesis = the rate of respiration
