Evolution

The process of change by which new species develop from preexisting species of the time at the genetic level the process in which inherited characteristics within population change over time

Artificial selection

The human practice of breeding animals or plants that have certain desired traits

Natural selection

The process by which individuals that are better adapted to there environment survive and reproduce more successfully than less well adapted individuals

Adaption

The process of becoming adaptive to an environment an anatomical physiological or behavioral change that improves a populations ability to survie

Fossil

The trace or remains of organisms that lived long ago most commonly preserved in a sedimentary rock

Homologous

Describes a character that is shared by a group of species because it inherited from a common ancestor

Speciation

The formation of a new species as a result of eveolution

Population Genetics

The study of frequency and interactions of alleles and genes in a population

Normal Distribution

A distribution of numerical data whose graph forms a bell shaped curve that is symmetrical about the mean

Genetic Equilibrium

A state in which the allele frequencies of a population remain in the same ratios from one generation to the next

Reproductive Isolation

A state in which a particular set of population can no longer interbreed to produce future generations of offspring

Subspecies

A taxonomic classification below species that groups organisms that live in different geographical areas differ morphologicaly from other populations of the species but can interbreed with other population of the species

Divergence

The evolutionary tendency or process by which animals or plants that are descended from a common ancestor evolve into different forms when under different living conditions

Speciation

The formation of a new species as a result of evolution

Species

A group of organisms that are closely related and can mate to produce offspring fertile offspring also the level of classification below a genus and above subspecies

Extintion

The death of every member of a species

Genetic equilibrium

A state in which that allele frequencies of a population remain in the same ratios from one generation to the next

Gene flow

The movement of genes into or out of a population due to interbreeding

Genetic drift

The random change in alleles frequencies in a population

Stabilizing selection

A type of natural selection in which the average from a trait is favored and becomes more commomn

Disruptive Selection

A type of natural selection in which two extreme forms of traits are selected
