What is science |
Science is an organized way of gathering and analyzing evidence about the natural world.
What is BIology |
Bio means life. Ology means to study. So Biology is the study of life. |
Observatoin |
All scientific problems start with observation. A good observation is making a good hypothesis. |
What are the steps of the scientific method? OHCA |
Observation - the act of noticing and describing what is happening in an orderly way Hypothesis - a scientific explanation for a set of observations that can be tested Controlled Experiment - an experiment in which only one variable is changed Analyze Data - process of inspecting, cleaning, transforming, and modeling data, propose and test a new hypothesis and accept or reject the hypothesis |
Why do you use a control in an experiment |
Having controls in an experiment shows what is normal and it allows you to compare that to the experiment |
Scientific Theories |
Scientific theories are explanations of what happened during the scientific method (what happened during the experiment and why?) |
What is necessary for survival of an organism? WNL |
Organisms need of raw materials - water and nutrients and a source of light (energy) |
Biosphere |
The surface, atmosphere and hydrosphere of the earth. The biosphere is as important as life itself because it is all of life. Without the biosphere, the Earth would be a lifeless planet such as Mars or Venus. |
Cladogram |
It's a diagram showing the relationship between a number of species.
Taxonomy |
The branch of science concerned with classification, especially classifying organisms. |
Botany |
The study of plants |
Anatomy |
The study of the body (humans)
Linnaeus |
Classification of plants, animals and minerals he introduced the standard hierarchy of class, order, genus, and species, his main success in his own day was providing workable keys, making it possible to identify plants and animals from his books. For plants he made use of the hitherto neglected smaller parts of the flower. |
Homo sapiens |
Another name for HUMANS |
What is the genus of humans |
Homo is genus for humans The species of humans includes neanderthals and many other extinct species of humankind |
Metabolism |
The chemical process that occurs within a living organism in order to maintain life. |
Bias |
Treating one side better than the other. In science it means having an opinion and made making up your mind about something before there is proof. |
Homeostasis |
a stable equilibrium between elements - All of your body's systems work together maintain homeostasis inside of your body - maintains body temperature |
Biosphere |
The part of earth where life exists |
Autotroph |
An organism that is able to create its own food (through photosynthesis) |
Heterotrophs |
They do not create their own food (humans or animals) - and must eat other organisms to live |
7 Levels of Classification (TAXON) KPCOFGs |
Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species |
How do we decide if two organisms are the same species? |
If they are able to mate and produce offspring, they are then of the same species. |
