Nucleus
A membrane enclosed area of the cell containing the cell's genomic DNA.
Endoplasmic reticulum
An area of folded membranes frequently containing ribosomes where active protein synthesis occurs.
Cytoplasmic membrane
The semipermeable membrane that separates the functioning area of the cell from the cell's outer environment.
Golgi apparatus
An area of layers of folded membranes containing proteins for processing by the cell.
Microfilament
Very thin structural proteins that give the cell shape and are capable of contraction to give the cell membrane movement.
Microvilli
Finger-shaped outward projections of the cell membrane that increase the surface area of the membrane and are an important feature of nutrient absorption tissues.
Mitochondria
A membrane-enclosed area of the cell where intense cellular respiration activity produces ATP for use by the cell.
Lysosome
A membrane-enclosed vesicle containing digestive enzymes for use inside the cell.
Vacuole
A membrane-enclosed vesicle containing storage molecules such as starch or glycogen for later use by the cell.
Secretory vesicle
A membrane-enclosed vesicle containing proteins or other molecules for secretion by exocytosis.
Chloroplast
A membrane-enclosed area of plant cells and some microbial cells where photosynthesis occurs.
Cell wall
A structure outside of the cell membrane found in plants and microbes that give protection and rigidity to the cell.
Plasmids
Small pieces of non-genomic DNA found in bacteria.
Chromatin
Intra-nuclear complexes of DNA and protein.
