Plasmid
Small, circular DNA Molecules
cDNA
Complementary DNAs. DNA created in a lab from an RNA transcript, using the enzyme reverse transcriptase. Corresponds to a certain gene but lacks introns. Is also created naturally by some viruses (retroviruses).
Intron
A region of a eukaryotic gene that is transcribed into RNA but is later excised from the mRNA transcript before translation into protein.
Exon
A region of a eukaryotic gene that is translated into a peptide or protein.
Gene
A section of DNA (or RNA, for some viruses) that encodes information for building a polypeptide or a functional molecule of RNA.
Gene expression
The transcription and translation of a gene, producing a protein.
Genetic engineering
The field of study of the manipulation of DNA sequences in living organisms.
Restriction endonuclease
A bacterial enzyme that cuts DNA molecules at a specific base sequence.
