Found throughout the CNS and at all neruomuscular junctions. It contributes to muscle action, learning, and memory. Interference in the action can cause paralysis. Low levels have been noted in Alzheimer's patients.
Acetylcholine
This chemical, found in the autonomic nervous system, contributes to control and alertness, helps form new memories and transfer them into long term memory
NorEpinephrine
Affects metabolism of glucose, energy release during exercise.
Epinephrine
Produced in the substania nigra, it contributes to movement, attention, and learning. Parkinson's disease is linked to lack of dopamine, while too much has been linked to schizophrenia.
Dopamine
Located in the brain and spinal cord, it is involved in the regulation of mood and in the control of eating, sleep, and arousal and may contribute to the regulation of pain and in dreaming. A lack of this leads to depression, aggressiveness, insomnia and eating disorders.
Serotonin
The major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, it is found throughout the brain and spinal cord. Sleep and eating disorders may be linked to abnormal levels of this.
