Diffusion

Molecules will move from higher concentration to lower

Osmosis

Movement of water through semipermeable membrane

Osmotic Pressure

Pressure needed for pure solvent to not move into solution

Hydrostatic Pressure

Pressure exerted by a liquid

Dialysis

Semipermeable membrane used to separate smaller molecules from the larger ones

Filtration

Molecules forced through membrane using hydrostatic pressure

Active Transport

Cells continuously move molecules/ions from lower concentration to higher

Pinocytosis

Cell drankin'

Phagocytosis

Cell eatin'

Hypertonic

Cell shrinks

Solution outside cell more than inside

Water leaves cell (crenate = shrivel)

Hematocrit - low, but not as low as hypotonic

Hypotonic

Cell swells

Solution inside cell more than outside

Water rushes into cell (lysis = rupture)

Hematocrit - lowest

Isotonic

Cell stays the same shape

Solution outside = solution inside

Hematocrit - 1/2 of whole blood

What affects diffusion?

Medium, temperature, and if it is polar/nonpolar

Which diffused best: liquid into liquid, liquid into semisolid, or solid into solid?

Liquid into liquid

How well did these diffuse?

A) Liquid into liquid

B) Liquid into oil

C) Liquid into semisolid

D) Solid into liquid

E) Solid into solid

A) Diffused really well

B) Nope

C) Diffused, but slowly

D) Diffused

E) Nope

Explain the procedure of the osmosis experiment.

1) Put sucrose into dialysis bag and tie it to thistle tube

2) Hang bag into beaker of water

3) Let sit and mark height of solution in 5, 10, and 15min

Explain the results of the osmosis experiment

-Solution in bag higher concentration than in beaker

-Sucrose can't get out (molecules too big) so water goes in to balance errythang

-Water keeps going in and raising amount in thistle tube

-If left overnight, it'd keep going until hit equilibrium

Explain the steps in the dialysis experiment

1) Half starch, half glucose mixture and put into dialysis bag

2) Place bag in beaker full of watah and let sit for 30min

3) Put beaker water into two test tubes (5mL each)
