Science
a process that uses logic, observations, and prior knowledge to answer questions (doesn't have to be a lab experiment)
Scientific Method
a process of doing science
Observation
something noticed in your surroundings using any of your senses
Purpose
a question in reference to the observation
Hypothesis
a testable, logic based, possible scientific answer to the purpose
Experiment
testing by collecting and recording data (data table often used)
Analysis & Conclusion
evaluation & interpretation of the data to show whether or not your hypothesis is correct (graph often used to show data)
Repeat
whether or not the hypothesis is correct, create a new hypothesis & test it, or test the same hypothesis and see if you get the same results
Theory
an explanation of observations & facts that are supported by lots of evidence & data, and are tested by multiple people multiple times
Quantative Observations
an observation of numeric data
Qualitative Observations
an observation of descriptive data
Direct Observations
an observation using sight
Indirect Observations
an observation using any sense other than sight
Inferences
a reasonable assumption based on observations & prior knowledge
Variables
changing conditions in an experiment (always at least 2)
Independent Variable
a variable you have direct control over
Dependent Variable
a variable that depends on the results of the independent variable
Controlled Experiment
an experiment that tests the effects of 1 independent variable at a time while keeping every other variable constant
Control Group
a group where the independent variable is NOT changed
Experimental Group
a group where the independent variable is changed and the data is recorded
Metric System
the universal system of measurement that is based on the number 10
Meter
the metric measurement for length
Liter
the metric measurement for volume
Gram
the metric measurement for mass
