Enzymes are:
proteins that act as biological catalysts.
Enzymes operate in:
an optimum range of pH and temperature, extreme heat or pH can denature (unravel) the protein and render it functionless.
Catalase is:
a liver enzyme that breaks down hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water.
What was the effect of temperature on catalase activity:
denaturation. Temperature increases an enzymes rate of catalyzed reaction but only up to a point. If the heat goes beyond the optimum temperature then the enzyme denaturizes (breaks down)enzymes.
What was the effect of pH on catalase activity:
Enzymes have an optimum pH of 6 to 8 above or below this range and the enzyme will prevent the enzymatic reaction
Enzymes function is:
to lower the activation energy required for a chemical reaction to take place. This increases the rate of the chemical reaction. All chemical reactions in a cell is catalyzed by a certain enzyme.
Catalyst:
A substance that increases the rate that a chemical reaction takes place but the catalyst is not consumed during the chemical reaction.
Catalse:
Enzyme found in liver cells and it's function is to break down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen.
2H2O2+catalse=2H2O+O2
What property of hydrogen peroxide makes it harmful to cells?
It is a toxic oxidative agent that is a by-product of cellular metabolic activities.
Cold temperatures:
slow down an enzymatic reaction.
Enzymes have a high turnover rate:
many reactions take place before dying.
Enzyme 3-D shape:
Determines it's functionality.
Active site:
3-D pocket that fits a specific substrate (lock & key fit).
Chopped liver:
produced less gas than whole liver.
