Rough ER
makes secretory proteins; is a membrane factory for the cell- adds membrane proteins and phospholipids to its own membrane and transfers them
Smooth ER
synthesis of lipids, metabolism of carbs, and detoxification of drugs and poisons; stores calcium ions
Golgi apparatus
enter of manufacturing, warehousing, sorting, and shipping; active in synthesis, modification, sorting, and secretion of cell products (mostly of ER products, but some of its own as well); consists of stacks of flattened membranous sacs (cisternae), each stack has a cis face for receiving (mostly from the ER) and a trans face for shipping (gives rise to other vesicles through pinching); products of the ER are modified and altered during their transmit from the cis region to the trans region
Ribosomes
composed of rRNA and protein, appear as small brown dots; nonmembranous organelles that make proteins (protein synthesis); free in cytoplasm (free ribosomes) or bound to rough ER or nuclear envelope (bound ribosomes)
