define gene mutation/substitution/insertion/deletion
gene mutation- a change in the base sequence of DNA, occurring within a gene/genetic material

substitution- nucleotide bases replaced with another

insertion- a new base is inserted randomly in the chain

deletion- a base is completely removed from the chain
possible results of a gene mutation
~the protein may continue to function normally/or still function but be altered (e.g. disrupt a metabolic pathway)/may no longer function

~the changing of an amino acid changes the shape of the protein significantly e.g. alters the active site of an enzyme; no longer acts like a catalyst)

~a frame shift resulting from an inserted base that changes all the amino acids would create a non-functioning protein (worst type of mutation)
