What are restriction enzymes?
(restriction endonucleuses) These are special enzymes that bind to short sequences on the DNA.
What do restriction enzymes look like?
They are symmetrical and have the same nucleotide sequence, but run in opposite directions. EX: GAATTC=CTTAAG
What is genetic engineering?
Moving genes from one organism to another.
What are the 4 stages that gene transfers share?
(CPCS) Cleaving, Producing Recombinant DNA, Cloning, and Screening
Describe cleaing DNA
Cutting the source and vector DNA, it separates different groups of DNA fragments by electrophoresis and restriction enzymes.
Describe the production of recombinant DNA
Recombinant DNA is formed to enter the host cell; it is made from parts of source DNA and parts of bacteria or plasmids.
Describe cloning
Infecting target cells with DNA-bearing vectors and allowing infected cells to reproduce. When reproduced, they form a clone-library.
Describe screening DNA
Selecting the particular infected cells that have reveived the gene of interest. They do this by using specific vectors that attract the gene of interest.
