What is fermentation?
Anaerobic respiration → without O2
How many processes are involved in fermentation and which?
Just one: Glycolysis
How many ATP and NADH are made?
ATP: 2
NADH: 2
What happens to the NADH?
It gets oxidizes while some organic molecules gets reduced, and NAD+ is recycled back into glycolysis
What are the 2 types of fermentation?
How do they occur?
Where do they occur?
1) Ethanol fermentation: by yeast enzymes decarboxylize (remove CO2 from) pyruvate
• occurs in wines and beers

2) Lactic acid fermentation: pyruvate is reduced, producing lactic acid
• occurs in muscles
What species usually performs fermentation?
What are the 3 types?
Microbes

1) aerobes
2) strict anaerobes
3) facultative anaerobes
Aerobes
microbes that can only survive in the presence of oxygen to undergo cellular respiration
Strict anaerobes
• microbes that cannot survive in the presence of O2
• must undergo fermentation
Facultative anaerboes
microbes that can live in the presence or absence of O2
