Plants continue developing throughput their lives and harbor embryonic, developing and mature organs at all points. |

Monocot roots |
Fibrous. Usually shallow and dense. Do not store as much material as taproots. Strong anchors. Rapidly absorb rainfall. |

Eudicot Roots |
Taproots. Stems from the radicle. Stores food to produce flowers and fruits during the reproductive season. |

Root Hairs |
Near root tips. Increase surface area in order to increase absorption. |

Water Uptake (roots) |
Water passes through hydrophillic epidermal cells of root walls to the root cortex. Passes through stele into xylem and shoot system. |

Adventitious Roots |
Arise from stems or leaves. Act as props to support tall aerial stems. Example: corn. |

Pneumatophores |
Specialized roots that stick above the waterline to provide oxygen to the roots found in anoxic mud. |

Mycorrhizae |
Form symbiotic relationships with most plants. Increase surface area for absorption, taking a small amount of water and minerals but transferring most to host plants. |

Nodes |
Points in stems where leaves are typically attached. |

Internodes |
The space between the points of attachment for leaves. |

Auxiliary Bud |
Found at the angle by each stem and leaf. Capable of forming a vegetative branch under stimulation. |

Terminal Bud |
Composed of developing leaves and a compact series of nodes and internodes. Partly responsible for inhibiting growth of auxillary buds through Apical Dominance. |

Apical Dominance |
Causes plants to grow taller instead of wider in order to increase exposure to light, especially in dense forests. |

Eudicot Flowers |
Appear in multiples of 4 or 5. Pollen grains have 3 openings (pores or furrows). |

Monocot Flowers |
Appear in multiples of 3. Pollen grains have a single opening to the outside, either a pore or a furrow. |

Vascular Bundles |
Arranged in rings in eudicots; scattered throughout or complexly arranged in stem of monocots. |

Stolons |
Runners or above ground horizontal stems. |
|
Rhizomes |
Horizontal underground stems. |

Tubers |
End of Rhizomes. |

Main photosynthetic organ of most plants. |
