What are the four processes that play a part in respiration?
breathing (ventilating), external respiration, gas transport and internal respiration.
What does the nose do?
The nose cleans incoming air, warms and moistens the air, and provides for the sense of smell.
What do the sinuses do?
The sinuses lighten the head and adjust air quality
What does the pharynx do?
The pharynx is the space behind the nose and mouth and provides a passageway for food and air
What does the larynx do?
The larynx is an adjustable entrance to the respiratory system that controls the position of the epiglottis and is the source of the voice
What is the trachea?
The trachea is the tube that conducts air between the environment and the lungs. It divides into the bronchial tree that conducts air to each lung.
What are the alveoli?
The alveoli are the functional units of the respiratory system. These minute thin-walled sacs are where oxygen diffuses from the air across a single-cell-layered eptihelium into the blood. Carbon dioxide produced by the cells diffuses from the blood into the alveolar air to be exhaled.
When the ___ and ___ contract, the volume of the thoracic cavity increases causing the pressure in the lungs to decrease.
diaphragm and external intercostal muscles
Inhalation occurs when the air (or gas) pressure in the lungs ______. When the same muscles relax, air (or gas) pressure in the lungs _____ causing expiration.
decreases, increases
What is tidal volume?
The volume of air inhaled or exhaled during a normal breath
Most oxygen is carried around the body bound to what? What is it called when theyre both together?
hemoglobin, oxyhemoglobin
The carbon dioxide produced as the cells use oxygen is removed by the blood in three ways: what are they?
dissolved in the blood, carried by hemoglobin, or as a bicarbonate ion. Most carbon dioxide is transported as bicarbonate ion that also serves as a buffer.
Where is the basic rhythm of breathing controlled?
breathing center in the medulla
