FMS
Flight Management System: A computer system on planes that uses a large data base to allow routes to be preprogrammed and fed into the system by the pilot.
Just in case the pilot says "The route won't go into the FMS" you won't say "What is that?" |
The pilot uses the altimeter setting for what purpose?
To adjust his/her altimeter to local barometric pressure to measure altitude above Mean Sea Level.
The altimeter setting goes from 29.92 to 29.98. What effect does that have on an aircraft's altimeter?
For every .01" affects the altimeter by 10 feet. In this instance, if the pilot is using 29.92 (instead of 29.98) for the altimeter setting, the aircraft is 60 feet higher than the altitude being indicated on the altimeter.
The altimeter setting changes from 29.94 to 29.60. What effect does that have on an aircraft's altimeter?
For every .01" affects the altimeter by 10 feet. In this instance, if the pilot is using 29.92 (instead of 29.60) for the altimeter setting, the aircraft is 320 feet lower than the altimeter indicates the aircraft is flying. When the altimeter is falling rapidly, it is necessary to keep the pilot updated so CFIT doesn't happen. If there is a large discrepancy between the mode C readout and the altitude the pilot reports, there is a chance the wrong altimeter was set by the pilot.

7110.65 2-6-2 |
When does hazardous weather information need to be broadcast on the ATIS?
Within 50 miles of airspace. You might want to double check with trainer and or SOP
When soliciting PIREPS, what information should the ATCS ask for?
1. Time.
2. Aircraft position. 3. Type aircraft. 4. Altitude. 5. When the PIREP involves icing include: (a) Icing type and intensity. (b) Air temperature in which icing is occurring. 7110.65 2-6-3 |

What is BGR noise abatement procedure?
All turbojet aircraft fly runway heading thru 1500 ft before being vectored on course. BGR noise abatement is an informal program. In formal programs participation
in the program is mandatory for aircraft operators and pilots as provided for in 14 CFR Section 91.129. |
What is the maximum speed below 10,000 ft?
250 kts. However, 14 CFR Section 91.117 permits speeds in excess of 250 knots (288 mph) when so required or recommended in the airplane flight manual or required by normal military operating procedures.

N17CB, LR35/R is requesting IFR clearance to KPQI at 9,000. The pilot requests that GC/CD put in the flight plan. When asked for specifics, the pilot states speed is 283 kts. Is this legal?
Yes. The speed filed in the flight plans are True Airspeed. True Airspeed is Indicated Airspeed correct for atmospheric pressure and temperature. (250kias =290ktas at 10,000 ft standard day) The speed limit is Knots Indicated AirSpeed which will always be lower than true airspeed.
Define Ground Speed
Simply put, Ground Speed is True Airspeed corrected for wind. So when an aircraft on ILS final says he is doing 150kts, and the radar readout (ground speed) says 110, the headwind component aloft is approximately 40 kts.

What is ARINC?
Aeronautical Radio, Incorporated (ARINC), established in 1929, The on-ground freq at BGR is 129.40. Someone might ask, but just be aware that it exist. When in doubt, call city ops.
What, not who, is HF
Hi Frequency. Used for long range communications i.e. C208 being ferried to LPAZ from KBGR. If a pilot request the freq, ask city ops.

The wx reports vsby 1sm. RY 33 RVR is 6000, 4500,2400. Must you give the pilot the RVR?
Yes. Only the touchdown RVR is required.
Runway 33 RVR is 4000, 800, 4000.
How would you read the RVR to the pilot. |
Runway 33 RVR Four Thousand,
mid Eight Hundred, rollout Four Thousand. Remember, all three are required if mid or rollout is less than touchdown and less than 2000. |
RY33 RVR is 1600, 1800, 1800. What is required.
Runway 33 RVR One Thousand six hundred.
Since the mid and rollout are greater than touchdown, only touchdown RVR is required. |
What is the calm wind runway?
RY 33
How would you read an RVR of 6500?
“Runway Three Three RVR more than Six Thousand
This could happen if prevailing vsby is 1sm or less but not enough to generate an RVR reading. |
How often is the ATIS made?
1. Upon receipt of any new official weather regardless of whether there is or is not a change in values. 2. When runway braking action reports are received that indicate runway braking is worse than that which is included in the current ATIS broadcast. 3. When there is a change in any other pertinent data, such as runway change, instrument approach in use, new or canceled NOTAMs/PIREPs/HIWAS update, etc. 7110.65 2-9-2
It is 1915Z, when the wind has dictated a runway change. The last weather sequence was 1853Z. What time stamp is on the new ATIS?
It is still 1853z. Just use the direct wind reading instruments to indicate current wind.

NDB

N4916B is showing a ground speed of 120. N80471 ground speed is 130 and is one mile behind N4916B. How many miles before N471 is even with N16B?
Thirteen miles is how far N80471 will travel. It will take 6 minutes.

Is the helipad located south of the terminal a non-movement area?
No. The taxiway leading to the helipad is a non-movement, but the pad is movement area under the jurisdiction of local control.
What is the deice frequency?
129.52
Where is the deice pad located?
North of gate 4 on the terminal ramp.
Where is U.S. Customs for non-jet aircraft unless otherwise advised?
On the GA ramp in front of the BGR AFSS building. There are designated areas painted on the pavement.
Where is the location of Dock 12?
The group of 4 hangars northeast of the terminal and southeast of the tower
The weather is VFR. A DC10 inbound advises they will conduct an autoland approach. What are you required to do as a tower team member?
Promptly issue an advisory if the critical area will not
be protected ... when approach will be conducted and the weather is reported ceiling of 800 feet or more, and the visibility is 2 miles or more. 7110.65 3-7-5 |
The RVR is 600ft. An aircraft wants to depart. Is that allowed?
Yes. It is up to the aircraft operator to determine the minimums applicable to their operation.

Maine86, H/K35R, is inbound VOR DME RY 33 to circle to runway 15. Can Maine86 circle to the left downwind?
No. "Circling NA NE of RY 15-33" is notated in the approach plates for KBGR.
MAINE86 has been issued his mission clearance. The pilot requests local clearance for 3 ILSs prior to depart on his mission. Should he be allowed to use mission squawk with amended clearance?
Probably not. Issue an IFR clearance with local squawk code. Either an IFR hand write or an FDIO entry amended to local code are some of the choices.
Is a clearance limit required in an IFR clearance?
Yes.
