WHat is a musical?
IT a play where amjority of words are sung. Music usually in popular music style, desgined to be sung by actors.
When were early musicals created?
In 1920s,influenced by ryhtms and harmonies of jazz and 20th century classical music.
When was West Side Story composed?

Instrumentation?
Sung by solo tenor accompanied by band of woodwind, brass, percussion and strings.
Accompaniment uses quiet dynamics, soft timbres and homophonic texture. Strings use harmonics and tremelo.
Structure?
Three main themes, 1. quiet, syncopated. 2. Loud, strident, in 2/4 3. Lyrical, slow moving.
Melody?
Syllabic.
Rhythm?
Change between 3/4and 2/4. Changes of metre, fast tempo and syncopation = exctiement and anticipation.
Accompaniment mainly on-beat and off-beat chords, create cross-rhythms.
Harmony?
Sharpened fourth (tritone) and flatterned seventh which leaves it unresolved. Incomplete and adds to Tony's expectation. Toanl, jazz-influenced.
Tonality?
D major, two section in C major.
Texture?
Homphonic, accompaniment - repeated riff, short syncopated chords, and fast um-cha accompaniment.
