INITIAL Laboratory tests for SLE
CBC, uroanalysis and blood chemistry panel
When ANA?
ANA usually present when the immune system fails to adequately distinguish between “self” and “nonself” when identifying a naturally occurring protein (or “self” protein) as foreign
ADDIITONAL lab tests for SLE
creatine phosphokinase (CPK), C-reactive protein (CRP), prothrombin time (PT) or partial thromboplastin time (PTT),complement levels (C3 and C4), antinuclear antibody test (ANA), and other autoantibody tests, such as anti-dsDNA and tissue biopsies
What are some considerations in testing for SLE?
The ANA test is positive in almost all individuals with systemic lupus. However, a positive test does not necessarily mean that you have lupus. Antibodies to DNA (anti-dsDNA) are found in half of the patients with SLE. Anti-dsDNA is one of the more specific tests for diagnosing SLE
