How do you convert decimals into fractions?
to convert a decimal to a fraction, set the decimal over 1 and multiply the numerator and denominator by 10 raised to the number of digits to the right of the decimal point. Then simplify the fraction
how do you compare fractions?
One way to compare fractions is to re-express them with a common denominator.

Another way to compare fractions is to convert them both to decimals

Another way is to cross multiply (page 396)
When the denominator of two fractions are the same, which one is bigger?

If the numerator is the same?
Fraction with the largest numerator is greater

Fraction with small denominator is greater
What is an equivalent fraction and how can you tell if they are so?
If multiplying or dividing both the numerator and denominator of the first one by the same number gives the second one.

You can also cross multiply. If both the products are equal then the fractions are equivalent.
(pg 398)
How do you reduce a fraction to lowest terms?
By dividing the numerator and the denominator by their greatest common factor.

If the GCF is 1 then its already in Lowest terms.
What is the first step in adding or subtracting decimals?

What are the remaining steps?
Line up the decimal points.

Add or subtract normally ignoring the decimals.

Then place the decimal immediately below the other ones.
How do you multiply decimals?
Ignore decimal, multiply normally.

Count the total number of digits to the right of the decimal points in both the factors and place a decimal point in the product that many places from the right.
How do you divide decimals?
Count the number of digits to the right of the decimal in the divisor, move the decimal point in both the divisor and dividend that many places to the right.

Divide normally, and if there is a decimal point in the dividend, place a decimal point in the quotient directly above the one in the dividend (page 400).
How do you multiply a decimal or whole number by a power of 10?
Move the decimal point as many places to the right as there are 0s in the power of 10, filling with zeros if necessary. (page 400)
How do you divide fractions?

Divide by a whole number?
to divide fractions, invert the second one and multiply
How do you multiply fractions?
Multiply by a whole number?
to multiply fractions, multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators
How do you add or subtract fractions with the same denominator?
Add or subtract the numerators and keep the denominator.
How do you add or subtract fractions with different denominators?
Rewite the fractions as equivalent fractions with the same denominators.
fractions get smaller as...

fractions get bigger as...
...their denominator gets bigger ...their numerator gets smaller
How do you write a mixed number as an improper fraction?

An improper fraction as a mixed number?
See page 405
How do you add mixed numbers?
Add the integers and add the fractions.
How do you subtract mixed numbers?

What if the fraction in the second number is greater than the fraction in the first number?
Subtrat the integers and the fractions.

Borrow one from the integer part. (See tutours notes for better way)
How do you multiply or divide mixed numbers?
Change them to improper fractions.
What are two ways to simplify a complex fractions?
Multiply every term in the num and denom by the least common multiple ofa ll the dens that appear in the fraction

or

Simplify the numerator and the denominator, and then divide page 407
How do you convert decimals into fractions?
