Beat
The pulse of music, like your heartbeat, it should remain steady.
Notes
Tell us how high or low to play, and how long to play.
Rest
A silent beat.
Double Bar
Indicates the end of a piece of music.
Repeat Sign
Indicates to repeat the piece of music again, without stopping.
Treble Clef
Indicates the postion of note names on a music staff.
Time Signature
Indicates how many beats per mesure and what kind of note gets that beat.
Note Names
Each note has a name, and each note name goes on a specific line or space.
Sharp
Raises a note by half of a beat and remains in effect the entire mesure.
Flat
Lowers a note by half of a beat and remains in effect the entire mesure.
Natural
Cancels a flat or a sharp and remains in effect the entire mesure.
Half Note
A note held for two beats.
Half Rest
Two silent beats.
Breath Mark
Take a breath throw your mouth after you finsh out the note.
Whole Note
A note held for 4 beats.
Whole Rest
Four silent beats
Duet
A piece of music with 2 different parts played together.
Key Signature
Tells us which notes to play with sharps or flats throghout the whole peice of music.
Fermata
Hold the note/rest longer than normal.
Harmony
2 or more notes played together, each combination forms a chord.
Pick-Up Notes
One or more notes that come before the first full measure. The notes are subtracted from the last measure of the piece of music.
Dynamics
Indicte how loud you need to play your notes. (forte, mezzo forte, piano)
Eighth Notes
An eighth note is half of a beat. 2 eighth notes equal 1 beat.
Tempo
The speed of the music.
Allegro
Fast tempo.
Moderato
Medium tempo.
Andate
Slower walking tempo.
Tie
A curved line connecting 2 of the same notes, play one note for the combined counts of the tied notes.
Dotted Half Note
Three beats
*a dot adds half of the value of a note*
Accent
Emphasize your note.
Accidental
A sharp, flat or natural sign that appears in the music without being in the key signuature.
1st and 2nd endings
Play through the 1st ending, then play through the repeated section of the music. Skiping the 1st ending, and playing the 2nd ending to finsh the peice.
Theme/variations
A musical form featuring a theme follwed by variations of that theme.
D.C. al fine
At the D.C. al fine play again from the beginning, and stop at fine.
Slur
A curved line that connects notes of different pitches. Tongue only the first note in a slur.
Phrase
A musical "santence". Try to play a phrase in one breath.
Multipe Mearsure Rest
The number above the staff will tell you how many mearsure to rest for.
Dotted quater and eighth notes
A total of 2 beats.

Trio
A composition with three parts played together.
Scale
A sequence of notes in an assending (upward) or desending (downward) order.
Chord & arpeggio
When 2 or more notes are played together, they form a chord or a harmony.
Soli
When playing music marked soil you are playing a group solo.
Eighth rest
Half a beat of silence.
Enharmonics
2 notes that are written differently, but sound the same and are fingered the same.
Chromatic notes
Altered with sharps, flas and natural signs that are not in the key signature.

The art of writing original music.
Improvisation
The art of freely creating your own melody as you play.
