Killing of all microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses)
Define GERMICIDE
Equally to fungicid, virocide

The agent used to kill bacteria
Define DISINFECTION
Use of agermicidal chemical agent to destroy the potential infectivity of an inanimate object. Imply killing of the pathogens likely to be encountered in that setting. E.g. application of lysol (phenol) to floors
Define ANTISEPSIS
Application of chemical agents to the surface of the human body to kill or inhibit pathogenic bacteria
Define SEPTIC
Characterized by the presence of pathogenic bacteria in living tissue.
c.f. aseptic: without pathogenic bacteria
Define SANITIZE
Describe the lowering of the bacterial content of food utensils or other objects, without necessarily killing all bacteria.
E.g. dishes washed in hot soap, sanitized water.
Define PRESERVATIVE
An agent used in small (non-toxic) concentratios to inhibit the growth of organisms in, for example, food or vaccines
Define PHENOL COEFFICIENT
A measure of the killing capacity of an agent, compared with phenol.
It is the ratio of the minimal killing concentration of phenol to that of the agent. Greater coefficient = lower concentration of the agent needed
