Prisioners of war, lawbreakers, and debters were slaves in Aztec society. Slaves were able to own land, goods, and other slaves while being a slave. Slaves could eventually be freed from slavery, unlike many other ancient civilizations.

The emperor maintained the empire and decided when to go into battle. The emperor's government officals collected taxes and ruled over regions of the empire.

|
A human sacrifice took place on top of a temple-pyramid. A priest would first cut the heart out of the victim and burn the heart. The priest would then push the corpse down the steps of the temple-pyramid, or carry the corpse down the steps if he or she was brave in their lifetime.
