ID

ID: Made up of a biologically inherited urges, impulses, and desires. Operates on the principle of pleasure, whatever feels good.


Example: The devil on your shoulder telling you to eat the chocolate cake, tempting us, when you're supposed to be eating healthy.

Ego

Ego: The conscious rational part of the personality that thinks, plans, and decides. It is ruled by the reality principle. The Ego mediates between the biological, unconscious impulses of the ID and the denying social environment.


Example: The Ego is the referee between the ID and the Super Ego and weighs pro's and con's.

Super Ego

Super Ego: Channel our behavior in socially acceptable ways and repress socially undesirable thoughts and actions.


Example: The angle on your other shoulder telling you not to eat the cake because you don't need it and it's not good for you.
