What is a detail drawing?

A description of a single part, describing by lines, notes and symbols the specifications for size, shape, material and methods of manufacture to be used in making the part.

What is an assembly drawing?

Description of an object made up of 2 or more parts.

What is an installation drawing?

One which includes all necessary information for a part or an assembly in the final installed position in the aircraft.

What are sectional drawings?

Cutting away part of an object to show the shape and construction at the cutting plane.

When is a full section drawing used?

When the interior construction or hidden features of an object cannot be shown clearly by exterior views.

When is a half section drawing used?

With symmetrical objects to show both the interior and exterior

What is a revolved section drawing?

It shows the shape of the cross section of a part.

What is a removed section drawing?

It illustrates particular parts of an object.

What are title blocks?

A means of identification.

Where are title blocks located on the drawing?

Usually in the lower right hand corner.

What information is included in the title block?

Drawing number

Name of the part or assembly

Scale

Date

Name of the firm

Name of the draftsman

Name of the checker

Name of the person approving the drawing

Where is the print number located on the print?

In the number block in the lower right corner of the title block. Could also be on the top border line, upper right hand corner or on the reverse side on both ends so it can be identified when rolled up.

What is the purpose of the print number?

Quick identification of the print.

What is the purpose of the universal numbering system?

It provides a means of identifying standard drawing sizes.

What is the first number of the universal numbering system?

1,2,4 or 5

What is the bill of materials?

A list of materials and parts necessary for the fabrication and assembly of a component or system.

If a drawing does not have a bill of materials, where would that information most likely be located?

Directly on the drawing.

If there are changes in dimensions, design or materials to a drawing, how are those changes documented?

In the revision block.

Where is the revision block normally located on the drawing?

Adjacent to the title block or at one corner of the drawing.

What information Is included in the revision block?

The identification symbol

Date

The nature of the revision

The authority for the change

The name of the draftsman who made the change

What are the reasons that notes may be added to a drawing?

Referring to a method of attachment or construction

To give alternatives so that the drawing can be used for different styles of the same object

To list modifications that are available

Where are notes located on a drawing?

Alongside the item to which they refer

Elsewhere on the drawing identified by numbers or letters

What are zone numbers on drawings?

They help locate a particular point on the drawing

Aircraft drawing zone numbers read from?

Right to left

Aircraft drawing zone letters read from?

Bottom to top

What are fuselage station numbers?

A numbering system used on large assemblies, usually measured from the note or zero station.

What are buttocks stations?

Locations left and right of the aircrafts longitudinal axis.

What are waterline stations?

Vertical locations on the airplane measured from the waterline.

What are wing station numbers?

Used to locate a point on the wing.

What are allowances when we are discussing dimensions in aircraft drawings and aircraft maintenance?

Allowable variations.

What are tolerances?

The sum of the plus and minus allowance figures.

What does scale refer to on a drawing?

The relationship between the drawing size and the actual object depicted.

What are the four common methods listed in the textbook used to illustrate objects graphically?

Orthographic protection

Pictorial drawings

Diagram

Flowcharts

What are orthographic protection drawings?

A system used in order to show the exact size and shape of all the parts of complex objects using multiple views.

How many possible views are there in an orthographic projection drawing?

6

What are the views that are possible in an orthographic projection drawing?

Front

Back

Top

Bottom

Right

Left

Which view is the principal view in an orthographic projection drawing?

Front

What is a detail view?

Shows a part of the object in greater detail.

What are pictorial drawings?

Similar to a photograph.

What are the three types of pictorial drawings used in aircraft maintenance?

Perspective

Isometric

Oblique

What is a perspective drawing?

It shows an object as it appears to an observer.

What is am isometric drawing?

It uses a combination of the views of an orthographic projection and tilts the object forward so that portions of all 3 views can be seen in one view.

What is an oblique drawing?

A drawing where 2 of the 3 axes are at right angles to each other.

What is an exploded view drawing?

A pictorial drawing of 2 or more parts that fit together as an assembly.

What is a diagram?

A graphic representation of an assembly or system.

What are the 4 types of diagrams listed in the textbook that are of concern to aircraft maintenance technicians?

Installation

Schematic

Block

Wiring diagrams

What is an installation diagram?

It identifies each of the components in the system and showed their location in the aircraft.

What is a schematic diagram?

Located components with respect to each other within the system.

What is a block diagram?

Used to show a simplified relationship of a more complex system.

What is a wiring diagram?

It shows electrical wiring and circuitry, coded for identification, of all the electrical appliances and devices on an aircraft.

What are flowcharts?

Used to illustrate a particular sequence, or flow of events.

What is a troubleshooting flowchart?

It is used for the troubleshooting of faulty components.

What is a logic flowchart?

Used for analysis of digitally controlled components or systems.

What are lines used to show in a drawing?

Boundaries

Edges

Intersections

Surface

Why do we need to use different kinds of lines in an aircraft drawing?

Each line has different meanings.

What are the 3 widths or intensities that are used on a drawing?

Thin

Medium

Thick

What are centerlines?

Made up of alternating long and short dashes, they indicate the center of an object or part of an object.

What is a dimension line?

A light solid line, broken at the midpoint for insertion of measurement indications, and having opposite pointing arrowheads at each end to show the origin and termination of the measurement.

Where are the dimension lines placed in a drawing?

Outside the outline of a drawing and between views if more than 1 view is shown.

How are the dimensions and any lettering placed in a drawing?

So that they read left to right.

How is the dimension of an angle indicated on a drawing?

By placing the degree of the angle in its arc.

How are the dimensions of circular parts given on a drawing?

In terms of diameter and usually marked within the letter D or the abbreviation DIA following the dimension.

How is the dimension of an arc given on a drawing?

In terms of radius and marked with the letter R following the dimension.

If you have several dimensions that are parallel to each other, how are the parallel dimension lines placed in the drawing?

So that the longest dimension is furthest from the outline and the shortest dimension is closest to the outline of the drawing.

How are the dimensioning of holes in an object given on a drawing?

From center to center.

What are extension lines?

Used to extend the line showing the side or edge of a figure for the purpose of placing a dimension on that side or edge.
