What is Diethylene Glycol and how does it relate to Austrian wine?
|
Colorless, odorless, poisonous chemical that some questionable wineries used to bolster their light wines’ body back in the 80s. In 1985, one winery tried to claim it as a legitimate winery expense on their tax return. Bottles tested positive for the chemical in nearly every export market. Ethylene Glycol (Not diethylene glycol), is antifreeze, but the association stuck. Austria responded by then enacting the strictest wine laws in the world, ensuring excellent quality across the board.
