When was the United Nations established?

On the 24th of October, 1945.

What is the purpose of the United Nations?

To solve conflicts between countries and promote human rights whilst maintaining world peace and security.

How did the Universal Declaration of Human Rights originate?

December 1946, at the first general assembly of the United Nations, the member countries agreed prioritizing writing a document that guarantees the rights of every individual. Two years was spent on producing the document by 18 people of mixed religion, race and ethnic background. A first draft was presented in September 1948. Eleanor Roosevelt made a passionate speech, urging on the completion of the UDHR on the 2nd of December. The 10th of December, 1948, was when the UN's General Assembly voted on the finished UDHR. No country voted no and only eight abstained.

What is the significance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights?

The Declaration has been adopted in or has influenced most national constitutions since 1948. It has also served as the foundation for a growing number of national laws, international laws, and treaties, as well as for a growing number of regional, sub national, and national institutions protecting and promoting human rights.

How was Australia involved in the creation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights?

A representative of Australia was among the 18 people working to produce the UDHR. Australia also assisted in wording the UDHR better after the first draft was created. Australia was one of the countries to vote Yes for the UDHR.

It was when white Australians believed Aborigines were a dying out race, that when the belief that they needed to be separated and 'protected' for their own good arose. They were placed in reservations or missions and taught the white man's way of life and religion.
