What is ATP?
ATP is the chemical energy supply for all cells. It is used for any activity requiring energy.
What are some examples of what ATP is used for?
heat production, muscle contractions, photosynthesis, locomotino, and DNA replicatoin
substances that speed up reactions
enzymes
combines with enzymes to fix together like a puzzle
substrate
used to help transport substances
cofactor
non-protein moleucule that activates the enzyme
coenzyme
What is photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is the chemical process some organisms use to make food.
What are the 2 phases of photosynthesis?
The light dependent phase and the light independent phase
Describe the light dependent phase.
Light hits the lead of the plant absorbed by pigments (chlorophyll). Electrons are transported, energy is released and some ATP is formed.
Describe the light independent phase.
The light independent phase is when carbon and NADPH form to create glucose
Where does photosynthesis take place?
photosynthesis takes places in the leaf's chlorophyl and in the mitochondria.
What happens to the oxygen that is produced during the light dependent reaction?
the oxygen created will be released into the atmosphere.
What is the importance of glucose?
Glucose can be used aas food to enter celluar respiration, or can be converted to other carb products such as salt or sugar
What is cellular respiration?
Cellular respiration is the process of changing glucose into a form usable by the cells.
What is the first phase of cellular respiration?
Glycolosis - converts glucose into 2 molecules of pyruvic acid producing energy in the form of ATP
What are the 3 phases of celllar respiration?
Glycolysis, Kreb's Cycle, Electron Transport Chain
What is the second phase of cellular respiration?
Kreb's Cycle - glycolosis and oxygen enter the mitochondria and converted into citric acid. It is then broken down by enzymes.
What is the third phase of cellular respiration?
Electron Transport Chain - electrons are passed from enzyme to enzyme. This allows ADP to combine with a phosphate to become ATP
In what phase of photosynthesis is the water molecule split and what is done with the H and the O?
Light Dependent Phase - Oxygen given off, hydrogen used to make glucose
Glycolosis takes place in the ___________
cytoplasm
Kreb's cycle takes place in the _____________
mitochondria
Electron Transport Chain makes ______ molecules of ATP
32-34
What is formed during the electron transport chain?
water
_____ and __________ use photosynthesis to obtain food.
plants some bacteria
In the light dependent phase, ___ hits the ____ of the plant where it is absorbed by _______
sunlight, leaf, pigments
The electrons released from the chlorophyll are replaced by____________
splitting a molecule of water
The end products of the light dependent reactions are _______, ______, and _____
ATP, oxygen, NADPH
