Where would a PICC line be instered?

-long term administration of chemo, antibx, TPN |

How should the RN care for a PICC line?
|
-assess q 8hr
-->note redness, swelling, drainage, tenderness & condition of dressing -change tube & positive pressure cap per protocol (usually 3 days) -use 10mL or larger syringe to flush the line -clean insertion port c alcohol for 3sec, let dry -perform flush for intermittent med admin usually 10mL of NS before, between, & after meds -use transparent dressings; usually change q 7 days & when indicated -advise clt to avoid excessive physical exercise on affected extremity |

Where are tunneled Caths (Hickman) inserted?

-Subcutaneous tunnel separating point where the cath enters the vein from where it enters the skin c a cuff

When is a tunneled cath indicated?
|
-need for vascular access is long term (1year+)
-commonly for chemo |

How do you care for a tunneled cath in regards to access?
|
-apply local anesthetic, palpate to locate the port
-clean c alcohol for 3 sec -access c noncoring needle -flush after every use & at least once a month |
