Phratries

The brotherhoods within the tribes that came from the Ionian ancestors.

Eupatrids

The aristocrats, who were the descendants of the of the founders of the four tribes and who monopolised the high positions and held large estates. Two prominent Eupatrid families were Alcmaeonids and the Philiads.

Georgoi

The small farmers who cultivated their own land

Demiourgoi

Craftspeople or artisans, they did not work on the land

Hektemoroi

Literally 'sixth parters', they were a class of peasants- most likely freeholders who had fallen into debt and had to work for rich landowners. They probably gave up one-sixth of their produce to their employees- hence the name.

Thetes

These people were free but landless labourers

Areopagus

The major political organisation- the council of Nobles, deriving its name from the hill where it held its sessions. Aristocratic in structure with the anual job of electing the nine archons.

Archons

The most important office, the leader who held broad and undefined administrative and judicial functions. There were nine elected every year.

Eponymous Archon

The most important Archon, who gave his name to the year in which he held the position. They were the chief magistrates. Leader of the Archons.

Polemarch

The Archon who was the chief military official (Athens' most important magistrate until the Persian Wars).

Archon Basileus

The 'King Archon' chiefly a religious position.

Six Archons, known only as legal officials

Ecclesia

A popular political assembly that had little real power.

Seisactheia

The relief of burdens: When Solon cleared all debt.

Pentacosiomedimni

Men of 500 bushels- eligible for archonship and every institution

Hippeis

Men of 300 bushels (cavalry)- eligible for lower magistracies, the new Council of 400 and the Assembly

Zeugitae

Men of 200 bushels (hoplites)- eligible for lower magistracies, the new Council of 400 and the Assembly

Thetes

men of less than 200 bushels - Eligible fo the Assembly only, but able to sit on the popular court of the appeal, the Heliaea
