Phratries |
The brotherhoods within the tribes that came from the Ionian ancestors. |

The aristocrats, who were the descendants of the of the founders of the four tribes and who monopolised the high positions and held large estates. Two prominent Eupatrid families were Alcmaeonids and the Philiads. |

Literally 'sixth parters', they were a class of peasants- most likely freeholders who had fallen into debt and had to work for rich landowners. They probably gave up one-sixth of their produce to their employees- hence the name. |

The most important Archon, who gave his name to the year in which he held the position. They were the chief magistrates. Leader of the Archons. |

The Archon who was the chief military official (Athens' most important magistrate until the Persian Wars). |
